WHY the gloves?

Nearly all Freemasons have them. Usually someone can be found frantically looking for a pair in their regalia case, only for someone else to offer a helping hand (or glove).

Originally, the reason why was practical. It dates back to the operative masons for whom it was the standard PPE, to protect the hands from rough stone, heavy labour, and to keep them clean.

Now, they are worn by Freemasons for the same reason that High Court Judges and Bishops historically wore white gloves: showing that their actions were pure, incorruptible, and done with reverence.

This isn't a dusty tome requiring gloves but you can learn about gloves here: https://solomon.ugle.org.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=1503

Our question to you this time is a fun one.

How many pairs of gloves have you owned?

Why THOSE colours?

You may have recently learned what the red apron means, but why are the other specific colours used in our regalia?

From the pure white of an Entered Apprentice's apron to the deep blue of Grand Lodge, we know each has its own powerful symbolism.

But... were there other, more practical or even political reasons these colours were chosen? Some historians have fascinating theories!

It's a classic "what came first?" debate:

🔵 Were the colours chosen because of their ancient meanings?

⚪ Or were the meanings and symbolism attached after the colours were selected?

What do you think? We want to hear your opinions in the comments! We'll post an article on the subject there too.

Blackballed?! 🎱

It sounds dramatic, right? For Freemasons, it’s a deep tradition, and serious method, of welcoming new members into the fold.

It may not be quite as dramatic as what you have heard before. In Freemasonry, it refers to our historic use of the ballot box, ensuring we choose the right members for each Lodge.

The process itself is one of utmost discretion: a private, individual vote. A white ball signifies acceptance; a black ball a decision to defer. The collective outcome is only known after all have cast their vote.
