Blue Acre Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre was started in 2002 by Caron North and Bob Regan, with one rescued horse named Blue (whom the centre is named after) to keep Carons horse, Raffles, company. Caron owned Raffles for over 20 years and her knowledge, dedication and passion for horse care is second to none. She also has an inherent connection with young people and has been responsible f
or changing many young lives. Fast forward to current times
- we are asked to take in so many horses and ponies in the UK who, simply don't "live up to expectations" or who may have served their owner well for many years but are no longer suitable and a younger model is required!.
- Due to irreverent breeding of certain cob type ponies, many are simply surplus to requirements and they are usually abandoned simply for being males. During 2020 -2021 we rescued 4 foals who had been abandoned at 3 - 4 months old where their mothers had been removed, leaving them without the nutrition they need to grow and without the ability to learn the skills they need to live with other horses. From our perspective, these youngsters deserve the chance of a better life but also come with a steep learning curve requiring training over a few years, particularly if they are colts (which is, often the case) so they will need gelding at some stage. A lot of requests for us to take horses are often simply due to them no longer being rideable and therefore being seen as a very expensive pet (It's not just dogs that are for life - horses live into their 30's). For us, this is a hard decision as it can mean ongoing medical costs and we have to seriously consider whether we take on a horse or possibly sign a death certificate. We can't save them all, much as they all need help we have to calculate the potential effect it might have on our commitment to the current residents. Recent times have made it a real struggle to survive but we are still here . We operate on a 42 acre farm in Old Windsor and are a registered charity. We are also registered for Gift aid. Please consider a donation if you can - no one is paid for their services and 100% of donations goes towards the care of our animals. We currently care for 48 horses and ponies; chickens and ducks; 3 goats and 2 pigs (every one of them rescued). We are run by a small team of unpaid volunteers and rely on event revenue; street collections and donations from the public to survive. If you are able to help fund raise or can afford a small donation we would be so grateful. Bank details:
