Next week marks an important moment for in Devon and a celebration of their enduring role in providing affordable, community-led homes.

We are honoured that our Royal Vice Patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, will officially open the new Feoffee Rise Almshouses in Ottery St Mary and visit the new Budleigh Salterton Almshouses on East Budleigh Road.

Almshouses continue to provide vital housing and thriving communities, proving that this centuries-old model remains as relevant and needed today as ever.

The county's heritage, community housing and grassroots sport will come under the royal spotlight when the Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester…

When heritage buildings require major repairs, the challenge is often as much financial as it is technical.

Robert C***s Almshouse Charity faced rising construction costs, conservation requirements and the complexities of restoring roofs dating back to 1860. With support from a £50,000 interest-free loan from The Almshouse Association, the Charity was able to undertake a major programme of roof restoration and conservation works.

The project involved complete roof re-slating, chimney repairs, replacement leadwork and rainwater goods, alongside restoration of decorative Victorian features — all delivered in close collaboration with conservation specialists.

The result is more than a restored building. These almshouses can continue providing affordable, well-maintained homes for local people in housing need while preserving an important part of Old Buckenham’s historic character.

This case study demonstrates how targeted financial support can help almshouse charities maintain, improve and safeguard their housing for future generations.

We’re delighted to see work getting underway on a major project in Derby to restore and renew the historic almshouses in London Road.
Led by The Liversage Trust, this £3 million scheme demonstrates how sensitive redevelopment can both protect heritage assets and deliver high-quality, community-led homes that meet modern standards.
It’s encouraging to see this supported by significant grant funding alongside charitable investment, showing how collaboration and care can enable almshouse charities to adapt historic buildings for today and the future.
We look forward to seeing the transformation progress and to sharing further learning from this important project with our members.

🏡 CASE STUDY – The Charity of Sir Thomas and Lady Kytson

Three 350-year-old thatched almshouses in Suffolk are now warmer, more energy efficient and fit for the future thanks to a £25,000 grant and £29,000 interest-free loan from The Almshouse Association.

The Charity of Sir Thomas and Lady Kytson carried out a sensitive thermal upgrade and renovation programme at Kytson Cottages – improving insulation, installing pellet stoves, upgrading electrics, restoring fireplaces and preserving historic features with traditional materials.

The result? Beautiful historic homes that are now warm, comfortable and sustainable for generations to come.

Standing up for - On 23 January, almshouse charity, Guildhall Feoffment was pleased to host a visit from MP Peter Prinsley to discuss the growing challenges faced by almshouse charities.
Without recognition as Affordable Housing in the National Planning Policy Framework, almshouses face unnecessary planning barriers, funding restrictions and additional costs – all of which limit our ability to provide secure homes for older people.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to share these concerns and highlight why change is urgently needed.
