Friday afternoon bat facts! Did you know, the brown long-eared bat has incredibly sensitive hearing that can detect the sounds of insects walking across a leaf? Or that the common pipistrelle can eat around 3,000 insects in a single night?

Our resident ecologist Max will be sharing dozens more fascinating facts on our first bat walk of the season tomorrow night. Come along and experience our local wildlife for yourself! Tickets available here:

We're delighted to report that our male swan seems to have found himself a new mate. He's been spotted engaging in 'mirroring behaviour' - an elaborate, synchronised courtship dance to establish a lifelong bond - with a new female swan. We don't know where she's come from, we don't know how she found him, but we're very glad she did!

**Woodland sale along Oakham Canal**
You may have seen signs advertising that the woodland at the far end of Oakham Canal has been put up for sale by the landowner, St John & St Anne, a charitable almshouse provider in Oakham and Uppingham. While the sale of the woodland could have a detrimental effect on our work since public access is currently granted under a permissive footpath agreement, we have been in conversation with St John & St Anne and they are doing their best to ensure that public access to the footpath can continue under new ownership. We are hopeful that a new owner will be willing to enter into a new permissive footpath agreement with us and we can continue offering the same full, well-maintained route along the canal as we do now.

We’re very sad to say that the female swan from the bonded pair on the canal had to be put to sleep on Friday. She had suffered a head injury that made it impossible for her to feed. Her and her partner have nested on the canal for many years and were currently building this year’s nest. The male swan is understandably currently upset and disorientated and searching for his mate. Please note he may act unpredictably so please keep a respectful distance.

Spring on the Oakham Canal.
Another successful morning Work Party. A bit of gentle trimming and litter picking, plus installed a bunch of new Bird and Bat boxes, kindly donated by Root-and-Branch Out CIC and Men and Women In Sheds Oakham. We’re a bit late in the season, but maybe they’ll get used for a second brood, or maybe next season. 🤞
Thanks to James, Jamie, Steve, Marion, Stephen and Phil.
