The Bwyd Powys Food team are down in Penarth today for the Better Food Traders conference, and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to connect with partners from across a wide range of projects, meet new people, and share ideas.

There’s a real sense of momentum around Wales at the moment, and it’s been inspiring to hear how much interest there is from other regions in the work happening at community level here. We've had some really engaging conversations throughout the day and come away with plenty of food for thought.

Richard, Chair of Bwyd Powys Food, alongside Mary, our North Powys Coordinator, and Chloe, our South Powys Coordinator. It’s been great to have the team in the room representing our communities and contributing to the discussions.

And what a beautiful day to be visiting Penarth!

Huge thanks to the Better Food Traders team for putting together such a productive and welcoming event.

🌍 World Environment Day 2026 / Diwrnod Amgylchedd y Byd 2026

This we face a deeply concerning reality: our food system is incredibly fragile, and it is costing our planet dearly.

The recent Dyfed Powys Civil Food Resilience report exposed a stark vulnerability right here at home. Less than 5% of the agricultural produce grown in our region is actually eaten by our local population, and just 5% of our land is used for horticulture and crops.

In an era of accelerating climate change, extreme weather, and unpredictable global supply chains, relying on thousands of food miles to feed ourselves is a risk we can no longer afford. It drains our environment, disconnects us from our land, and leaves our communities vulnerable.

But there is hope if we act now. At Bwyd Powys Food, we believe that restoring our environment starts with reclaiming our food system. By shifting toward local, agroecological growing, we can heal our soils, slash carbon emissions, and build true civil resilience.

How can you take action today?
1️⃣ Sign the Powys Food Charter: Commit to a sustainable, secure food future.
2️⃣ Support local: Cook with seasonal, locally sourced staples to reduce food waste.
3️⃣ Grow your own: Even a small patch or windowsill builds vital local knowledge.

Let's move away from global fragility and build local resilience. 💚

Ar y hwn, rydym yn wynebu realiti sy’n achosi pryder dyfnach: mae ein system fwyd yn eithriadol o fregus, ac mae hynny’n costio’n drwm i’n planed.

Datgelodd adroddiad diweddar Gwydnwch Bwyd Sifil Dyfed Powys wendid amlwg yma gartref. Mae llai na 5% o’r cynnyrch amaethyddol a dyfir yn ein rhanbarth yn cael ei fwyta gan y boblogaeth leol, a dim ond 5% o’n tir a ddefnyddir ar gyfer garddwriaeth a chnydau.

Mewn oes o newid hinsawdd carlam, tywydd eithafol, a chadwyni cyflenwi byd-eang anrhagweladwy, mae dibynnu ar filoedd o filltiroedd bwyd i’n bwydo ein hunain yn risg na allwn fforddio ei chymryd mwyach. Mae’n ddisbyddu ein hamgylchedd, yn ein datgysylltu oddi wrth ein tir, ac yn gadael ein cymunedau mewn sefyllfa fregus.

Ond mae gobaith os gweithredwn nawr. Yn Bwyd Powys Food, rydym yn credu bod adfer ein hamgylchedd yn dechrau drwy fynnu ein system fwyd yn ôl. Drwy symud tuag at dyfu lleol, agroecoegol, gallwn iacháu ein priddoedd, torri allyriadau carbon, a meithrin gwir wydnwch sifil.

Sut gallwch chi weithredu heddiw?
1️⃣ Llofnodwch Siarter Fwyd Powys: Ymrwymwch i ddyfodol bwyd cynaliadwy a diogel.
2️⃣ Cefnogwch yn lleol: Coginiwch gyda chynnyrch tymhorol, lleol i leihau gwastraff bwyd.
3️⃣ Tyfwch eich hun: Mae hyd yn oed llallior bach neu silff ffenestr yn meithrin gwybodaeth leol hanfodol.

Gadewch i ni symud i ffwrdd o fregusrwydd byd-eang a meithrin gwyndwch lleol. 💚
