Last week marked the Official Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III, Patron of the Royal British Legion.

As part of the celebrations, the King’s Birthday Honours recognise people from across the UK who have made exceptional contributions to their communities.

We are particularly pleased to see recognition for those who have dedicated their time and energy to supporting veterans, Armed Forces families, remembrance, and the wider Armed Forces community. This includes individuals working and volunteering for organisations such as Royal British Legion, Forces Employment Charity, Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, The Royal Marines Charity and Royal Star & Garter

These honours are a reminder that service takes many forms - from military service itself to the countless volunteers, staff and supporters who continue to help veterans and their families long after their service has ended.

From everyone at Newton Abbot, Royal British Legion, we send our congratulations to all those recognised.

Today, the Newton Abbot Branch of the Royal British Legion commemorates Decoration Day.

This annual act of remembrance reflects a shared connection with our twinned Royal Canadian Legion branch in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where veterans and volunteers honour the graves of servicemen who lost their lives while training in Canada during the Second World War.

Here in Newton Abbot, we remember those buried at Wolborough Cemetery, including Commonwealth war graves and Canadian servicemen far from home.

Decoration Day is a simple but important reminder that remembrance is not only about major anniversaries or national ceremonies - it is also about quiet acts of care, respect and continuing memory across generations and across the Commonwealth.

We will remember them.

Today we remember D-Day, 6 June 1944.

On this day, thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in one of the largest military operations in history. Many were very young men, facing enormous uncertainty as they crossed the Channel into occupied Europe.

Behind every landing craft and every unit involved were families waiting at home, communities following the news, and ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events.
Today we remember all those who served during the Normandy campaign, those who never returned, and the generations whose lives were shaped by the events of that day.

Many families in Newton Abbot and the surrounding area will still have stories, photographs and memories connected to D-Day and the Second World War.

If your family has a connection you would like to share, we would be honoured to hear it.

We will remember them.
