NARS Welcome to the official page of the National Association of Racing Staff. It was previously called the Stable Lads Association (SLA).

NARS is commited to improving pay, conditions of service and the overall employment position of racing staff. The SLA was originally formed in July 1975 after the strike at Newmarket Racecourse over poor pay and conditions. The home of the SLA was based in Derby. In 2007 the organisation changed its name to its current status and became affiliated to the Trade’s Union Congress. In 2013 the NARS he

Summer jumping seems far away now the rain has finally started to fall. Back in July Uttoxeter Racecourse, so kindly helped sponsor Best Turned Out racing staff for every race on the Friday card, and had a raffle for all staff on the Sunday.

It proved a massive success, and Ludo Gaubusseau was the lucky winner of the raffle (Photo taken by Nigel Kirby Photograhy).
Grace and Dotty sponsored flat caps for all the winners of Best Turned Out staff. Among the winners is a staff member from Donald McCains, Shelley Johnson from Adam Nicols, and Lawney Hill.

Racing staff are being offer the opportunity to attend QIPCO British Champions Day for free on Saturday 17 October.

QIPCO British Champions Day is the thrilling finale to the British Flat season. The Ultimate Raceday features seven races , five Group 1s - with the very best horses, jockeys and trainers competing.

After racing, continue celebrating in the After Party with live music from chart-topping duo SIGMA and renowned saxophonist Ellie Sax.

Career Path Spotlight 🏇

With the yearling sales fast approaching at Tattersalls in Newmarket, we're taking a look at the career journey of Freddie McKibbin, which has taken him all the way to the rostrum at Tattersalls.

We caught up with Freddie at a previous sale to talk about his career in racing. Having grown up with an interest in racing, Freddie started out working for trainer Simon Crisford before his career took him to Ireland, Australia and eventually back to Newmarket, where he is now an auctioneer at Tattersalls.

Freddie's journey is a great example of the many different career paths available within the racing industry – and how your career can take you places you might not have expected.

NARS and its members are disappointed that the 2027 fixture list is to be reduced by just 18 fixtures.

Discussions were held within the commercial committee which NARS sits on which identified the need for a much bigger fixture reduction.

The BHA have stated they have made their decision based on a long-term growth agenda and to reduce the fixture list by more than 18 would damage that objective.

A long-term growth agenda is fine, but if you don’t have the people with the right skills to deliver British racing at its best it’s pointless and the continued demands made of participants is not sustainable.
