NARS Welcome to the official page of the National Association of Racing Staff. It was previously called the Stable Lads Association (SLA).

NARS is commited to improving pay, conditions of service and the overall employment position of racing staff. The SLA was originally formed in July 1975 after the strike at Newmarket Racecourse over poor pay and conditions. The home of the SLA was based in Derby. In 2007 the organisation changed its name to its current status and became affiliated to the Trade’s Union Congress. In 2013 the NARS he

ad office moved to The Racing Centre, Newmarket, racing’s headquarters and where a third of the industries staff are based.

🏇Meet the NARS Sponsored apprentice and conditional jockeys for 2026 🏇

This year NARS is sponsoring 6 apprentice and conditional jockeys. Our apprentice jockeys are selected by the NARS Executive Committee, and we’re proud to support them as they develop their careers in racing.

The last jockey we would like to introduce is who is based at . Jack is a 5lb claimer on fire. Jack has had 48 winners so far, and only two wins from claiming 3lb. Wish Jack good luck as he has one ride tomorrow, and two rides Saturday at Epsom on Oaks and Derby day. We’ll hopefully see Jack riding at more of the big meetings throughout the year 🤞

Newcastle Racecourse

Information ahead of this evenings meeting.

Unfortunately, the upgrading work to the hostel and stable staff facilities is a week behind due to an unforeseen problem.

Therefore, there will be no day changing or shower facilities in the normal place for this evenings fixture.

Male and Female day changing will be available in the golf club, and the appropriate signage will be in place.

If anyone is wanting to shower, they will be available in the hotel at the top of the main racecourse drive.

I understand that is slightly further than ideal, but there will be a member of staff on hand to shuttle people backwards and forwards if required.

44 players from all over the country came to Newmarket on this beautiful sunny day to enjoy a round of golf.

We were so pleased to see so many familiar and new faces joining us and spending the day together. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves with some “friendly” competition throughout the course.

Our overall winner was Eddie Cuthbert with an impressive 40 points — congratulations! 👏

POOL MONEY
IS THE SHARE FAIR?

Pool money is the staffs % of their yard’s prize money.

We have advised on how a pool money committee should work and how the shares should be divided, this information can be found on our website, where a template is available too.

However, most staff aren’t aware of the fact part-time employees must be paid a pro-rate share.
That means if a part time employee works 30 hours a week, they should have ¾ of a share, if they work 20 hours a week, it would be ½ a share and so on and so on.

A lot of part time staff only work the mornings but that’s likely to be 30 out of 40 hours a week, hence they should get a ¾ share. I know this won’t go down well with the full-time staff, but the law is clear in this respect, part-time staff must be included.

Any questions, please give us a call, or see more on our website:

Pool money is the staff’s percentage of prize money won by each yard. As an average the pool money is 5% of the prize money value. It is managed by Weatherbys and paid to the trainer each quarter. We have included the rules below for you to look at and a template we recommend all […]
