🩵 ADHD and Motivation 💙

One of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD is that people simply aren't trying hard enough.

ADHD affects the brain systems involved in motivation, initiation and reward. This is why someone can desperately want to do something and still feel unable to begin.

If you've ever thought, "Why can't I just do it?" you're not alone.

The issue is often neurological, not motivational.

💙 SEND Support Doesn't Start With an EHCP 🩵

Many families spend months or years waiting for assessments.

During that time, children can struggle academically, emotionally and socially.

A diagnosis can be valuable, but support should never be delayed until one arrives.

Schools have duties under SEND law to identify and support needs as they emerge.

Need comes first. Diagnosis comes second.

ADHD and addiction

Addiction is often seen as a lack of willpower.

But for many people with ADHD, it’s not that simple.

ADHD and addiction are closely linked - and the reason lies in how the brain works.

Understanding this can help reduce blame, increase compassion and lead to better support.

We have created a helpful fact sheet to explain the link between ADHD and addiction

Imagine if every teacher, parent and professional understood this:

ADHD is not a behaviour disorder.
It’s a neurodevelopmental condition.

That one shift could mean:
• More support
• Less shame
• Better outcomes

And children who feel understood, instead of judged.

If you’ve been told your child is “just behaving badly,” you’re not alone.

But you’re also not imagining it when you feel there’s more going on.

ADHD is real.
It’s recognised.
And it deserves the right support.

Keep asking questions. Keep advocating.

The Graduated Approach

If your child has SEND, including ADHD, it's important to know that schools are guided by the SEND Code of Practice, which sets out their legal duties and expectations. The graduated approach is a key part of this process: it ensures schools Assess, Plan, Do and Review support for pupils so that every child receives the help they need.

We have created a helpful fact sheet to guide you through exactly what support could look like in school.

ADHD is about differences in how the brain manages things like:

• Focus
• Motivation
• Time
• Emotions

It’s not about knowing what to do - it’s about being able to do it in the moment.
That’s why reminders, routines and support strategies are so important.

Support works better than punishment.

Every time.
