🌿 Community Champion Spotlight: Lorna Robbins 🌿

Lorna Robbins has been part of the community in Minehead for over 25 years and has contributed to many local organisations and events. From helping run community groups to supporting local fundraising and volunteering, she’s passionate about bringing people together.

Today Lorna is President of the Minehead WI, helping lead a welcoming group that meets monthly and encourages women to connect, learn and support one another.

Tai Chi instructor for Age UK Somerset
Member of the organising team for Dunster by Candlelight
Fundraising support for St Margaret's Hospice Care

Working with like-minded people who care about their town and want to make things happen.

🌸 Get involved:
The Minehead WI meets 3rd Wednesday of every month, 7pm at Foxes Hotel.
New members are always welcome, it’s a relaxed and friendly group with around 35 members.

🌟 Interesting Fact:
Before focusing on community work, Lorna ran Nutcombe Chocolates for 15 years, creating handmade chocolates, Easter eggs and festive treats sold locally and beyond.

Community energy talk: Tuesday 17 November

Come join the Minehead Halloween Beach Clean!

🎃🌊 HALLOWEEN MILLION-MILE SCREAM (CLEAN) – MINEHEAD BEACH! 🌊🎃

Join Plastic Free Minehead and Plastic Free Exmoor for a special Surfers Against Sewage Million-Mile Clean on Saturday 31 October at 10.30am.

📍 Meet: Outside Channel Events’ Adventure Centre, Warren Road, Minehead, TA24 5BG
⏰ Time: 10.30am–12 noon

We’ll be cleaning Minehead Beach and the surrounding seafront areas, helping to protect our beautiful coastline from the litter and plastic pollution that threatens our marine environment.

🧤 We’ll provide litter pickers and collecting sacks. Just dress appropriately for the weather and come ready to make a difference!

👻 HALLOWEEN BONUS! 🎃

As it’s All Hallows’ Eve, we’ll be awarding a prize for the scariest piece of litter or debris discovered during the clean! What creepy creations might the tide have washed ashore? 🕷️

♻️ This is part of the Surfers Against Sewage Million-Mile Clean campaign. We’ll sort and record everything we collect, ensuring that as much as possible is recycled.

People's Emergency Briefing. Second showing in Minehead. Bookings now open.

Members from the West Somerset Green Action Group are organising a second Minehead screening of the People's Emergency briefing on the 8th of December at The Minehead Community Centre.

The film is short, non-partisan and based on the evidence. It explains what the climate and nature crisis means for us here in the UK, and points to practical solutions and actions. It’s a chance to understand the facts together as a community, without misinformation or political division.

If you'd like to support by helping with marketing or simply sharing the event with your networks, or perhaps help to set up and make refreshments at the event, get in touch; we would love for you to join us.

We will also be directly inviting representatives from local businesses, CICs and groups, with the aim of inspiring them to consider screening the film themselves.

Three chances to see the People’s Emergency Briefing near you this autumn and winter.

East Quay are screening it in Watchet on 20 October, with another showing in Carhampton on 19 November.

Members of the Green Action Group are also hosting a free screening at Minehead Community Centre on 8 December.

The film is short, non-partisan and based on the evidence. It explains what the climate and nature crisis means for us here in the UK, and points to practical solutions and actions. It’s a chance to understand the facts together as a community, without misinformation or political division.

Are you concerned about what’s happening to nature? Do you wonder how to respond? 🌎

The Peoples Emergency Briefing, is a 50-minute climate and nature film presented by Chris Packham, bringing together leading experts to present the latest evidence and help audiences engage with the issues on a human level.

With over 5000 screenings, and 9/10 people saying they’ve been moved to act after watching, it is creating a substantial shift in awareness and action across the UK.

Join us at the Methodist Church Schoolroom for this important opportunity to share our cares and concerns, and to hear more about the different areas of action already happening locally.

On Saturday, Zara, from MCDT went to Taunton to speak at Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Wilder 2026 conference, telling people about the work of our Green Action Group.

It was a full day of ideas from community groups around Somerset. There were talks on a youth-led pollinator project at a skate park in Wiveliscombe, a school project about ducks and litter, and Climate Adaptation Plans in Minehead and Wells. There were also stalls from over 15 local groups, and workshops in the afternoon.

It’s good to see so much going on across the county, and we were glad to share what’s happening here in Minehead. Thank you to Somerset Wildlife Trust for inviting us.

The big news is that Minehead Bay Festival has a date for next year. Save Saturday 28 August 2027, when the festival returns for its sixth year. It's a free, community-led day powered by more than 80 local volunteers, and we'll share more in the coming months.

Our Green Action Group has also been busy. The screening of The People's Emergency Briefing at Minehead Community Centre was a full house, and we may organise another given the level of interest. Last month, volunteers planted fruit trees and 500 bulbs at Ellicombe roundabout with the National Trust. If you'd like to get involved, you're very welcome. There's plenty happening locally too. The Exmoor Dark Skies Festival starts on 16 October, Minehead Triathlon takes place on Sunday 18 October, and The Avenue Cinema, the Regal Theatre and East Quay in Watchet all have a full October programme.
