🎖️ BEHIND THE VOV DESK: EPISODE 1

Every organisation has to start somewhere...

Some people have fancy offices, expensive desks, comfortable chairs and meeting rooms.

Me?

I've commandeered my 9-year-old son's old table and chair 🤣

Welcome to VOV Headquarters! 😂

No fancy office. No staff. No boardroom.

Just me, my laptop, a brew, a notebook full of ideas and a chair designed for somebody considerably smaller than me!

But don't let the furniture fool you.

Behind this little blue desk, there's been a hell of a lot going on.

From producing the VOV Community Insight Report 2026 and developing the LEAA Framework to launching The Listening Room, gathering community feedback and working towards turning veterans' voices into meaningful action.

And that's only scratching the surface.

I'm building Value Our Veterans from the ground up. Learning as I go, making decisions, facing challenges and occasionally wondering what on earth I've taken on 😂

So I thought it was about time I started showing you what actually happens behind the scenes.

The work, the progress, the frustrations, the decisions, the achievements and probably a fair amount of chaos along the way!

Because VOV isn't being built in some impressive corporate headquarters.

It's being built right here.

At my son's old table.

With a brew.

And a bloody tiny chair 🤣❤️

UNDER MY DIRECTION 🇬🇧

Let me make something very clear.

Value Our Veterans was not created to sit quietly, share a few awareness posts and pretend that's enough.

It was created because I believe our veterans deserve better than endless conversations about problems that never seem to get resolved.

And I have absolutely no intention of allowing VOV to become just another voice lost in the noise.

I've spent months listening, asking questions, collecting evidence and reading experiences that should make people sit up and pay attention.

Some of what I've heard has been heartbreaking.

Some of it has been infuriating.

And some of it has left me asking one very simple question.

How are we still getting this so wrong?

We hear plenty about commitments, initiatives, strategies and support.

But commitments mean very little to someone who is still struggling to get the help they need.

And awareness means very little if nobody is prepared to ask what happens next.

I'm not here to collect sympathy. I'm here to demand accountability.

That means asking difficult questions.

Challenging decisions when the evidence warrants it.

Giving veterans and their families a platform where their experiences are taken seriously.

And refusing to confuse publicity with progress.

I won't promise miracles.

I won't claim to speak for every veteran.

And I won't pretend that one person running a growing platform can change an entire system overnight.

But I will not build Value Our Veterans into something that simply observes the problems and moves on.

Under my direction, VOV will be independent in its thinking, evidence-led in its approach and determined in its purpose.

I am not interested in arguments for attention, political point-scoring or attacking organisations that are genuinely trying to help.

I am interested in answers. Accountability. Action.

Because veterans should not have to fight another battle just to be heard after serving their country.

And if Value Our Veterans is going to grow, it will grow with a purpose.

Not just a bigger following.

A stronger voice. Greater influence. And something meaningful to show for it.

This is the direction I'm taking VOV.

And I'm not backing away from it.

🎧 THE VOV LISTENING ROOM IS OPEN 🎧

I've been working on something new for VOV.

The VOV Listening Room is simple:

One question. One subject. A space to be heard.

This isn't about ticking boxes or telling veterans what their experience should have been. It's about listening to what it actually was.

CURRENT SUBJECT: LIFE AFTER SERVICE

When you left the Armed Forces, what was the ONE thing you weren't prepared for?

This question is for veterans and those who have served in the Armed Forces.

You can respond anonymously. You don't need to sign in, and VOV won't ask for your name or email address. Share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

I'll look at the themes that come through and use what I'm hearing to help shape what VOV looks at next.

Today, I’m very proud to publish the Value Our Veterans Community Insight Report 2026.

This report has been built from the voices and experiences shared with Value Our Veterans, veterans, families, and those who support our Armed Forces community.

The message coming through is clear.

People are speaking about the gaps they see, the support they struggle to access, and what they believe needs to change.

This isn’t where the work ends.

It’s where the next part begins.

Listen. Evidence. Act. Amplify.

Thank you to every single person who took the time to have their say. Your voice matters and I intend to keep making sure it is heard 🇬🇧

Sometimes, looking after your mental health doesn’t mean having all the answers.

Sometimes it means stepping away from the noise, taking a breath and putting one foot in front of the other.

You don’t have to see the whole path ahead.
You only need to take the next step.

And if someone you care about is struggling, don’t wait for them
to reach out.
Reach in. Walk beside them. Remind them they’re not alone💚

WORLD SU***DE PREVENTION DAY
10 SEPTEMBER 2026

We often tell people who are struggling to reach out.

But when somebody is fighting to survive, reaching out may feel impossible.

So today and every day, let’s reach in.

Today, we remember every life lost to su***de. We stand beside those living with suicidal thoughts, the families left behind, and every person fighting a battle in silence ❤️

Check on the person who has gone quiet.
Ask the difficult question.
Stay long enough to hear the honest answer.
Remind them that they matter.

Don’t wait for them to reach out. Reach in.

September is Su***de Prevention Month 💙

We often tell people who are struggling to reach out.

But when someone is exhausted, overwhelmed or feels like a burden, reaching out can seem impossible.

So reach in.

Send the message. Make the call. Ask the question and be prepared to listen to the answer.

You don’t need perfect words. Sometimes, simply saying “I’m here, and you don’t have to face this alone” can open the door to a conversation.

To every veteran, family member and person silently struggling:

You matter. Your life matters. Needing support does not make you weak.

One conversation can make a difference.
