The man behind the 'best taxi company in the world', Mr Salmon - which doubled up as a takeaway for late night revellers - has died at the age of 88 💔

Alfanso Samon ran Salmon Cars in the 1980s and 1990s and when he and his staff weren't busy driving customers around, they were cooking fried chicken and dumplings for clubbers waiting to go home after nights out which would often see massive queues down the street late at night 🙌

Former Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam dubbed the taxi company the 'best in the world', saying it would pick people up 'from any club or shebeen'.

Mr Salmon also operated Sam Sam's takeaway and a greengrocer, popular among pupils at nearby Trinity High School for its selection of sweets ❤️

His son Gavin said: "He was a hardworking man who would never ask for anything in return. He always wanted for other people to be happy.”

A father to six sons - Devon, David, Delroy, Marvin, Gavin and Michael - Mr Salmon passed away peacefully in his sleep last Thursday.

Mr. Salmon’s shop on Greenheys Lane (Hulme) was a beloved, legendary local institution that is now permanently closed. Operating from the 1980s through the 1990s, it functioned as both a grocery store and a takeaway, widely known for selling hot food, snacks, and also operating Salmon Cabs taxi service.

For many years of excellent service, special bonds were formed with locals within the community & surrounding areas and made Mr Salmon a widely respected formidable presence in Hulme & Manchester. He will be greatly missed, but is held in such high regard by all of us local community members who knew and loved Mr Salmon for many years. We will always remember you!

Mr Salmon has sadly passed away, our thoughts, love & condolences go out to his Family & Loved ones during this difficult time. Rest peacefully Mr Salmon. ❤️

| A 40-year-old man has been arrested following a serious assault on officers on Denmark Road, Manchester yesterday afternoon.

At around 4:55pm on Tuesday 12 May, officers were patrolling in the Denmark Road area of central Manchester when a man spat at a marked police vehicle as it drove past.

Officers stopped to speak with the individual, who then produced a knife and attacked them.

During the incident, one officer was slashed in the face and neck and sustained serious injuries. Two other officers were also assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

Officers deployed a Taser and PAVA spray to detain the individual who was resisting arrest.

The offender was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a bladed article and possession of Class B drugs and remains in custody for questioning.

Following treatment, the officer has since been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb, from the City of Manchester district, said: “Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public and this was a violent and potentially life-threatening attack.

“No one should go to work fearing violence and our officers are no exception.

“We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will work tirelessly to ensure the offender is brought to justice.”

| Four further arrests have been made following an investigation into a fatal stabbing on Raby Street, Moss Side on Friday 8 May at around 11pm.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday 9 May and remains in custody.

Four further individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident.

One man, aged 24, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Two men, aged 25 and 38, and a woman aged 26, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Edwards, from our Major Incident Team said "We now have five people in custody following this tragic incident.

"These additional arrests mark a significant step in our investigation and show our continued commitment to securing justice for the victim and his family.

We are still urging anyone who may have information to please report to us. This could include anyone who witnessed the event or has mobile phone, CCTV or dashcam footage in the area at the time of the incident.
