There's a buzz in the air! Blossoms are blooming, and the sun is shining. It feels like a good time to talk about the upcoming summer term, and tell you about a great project happening in the woods.

Unfortunately Build Wild is not able to run this summer, but one us and a couple of brilliant friends are running a Forest School Friday in Paupers Wood during the upcoming term.

Check out the attached flyer and this link for more information on what to expect and how to book: https://j.mp/39uY6SN

"A full day of bushcraft and woodland crafts with Matt, Mary, Natasha and Hayley. Decades of experience between them, DBS checked and first aid qualified. We will work with the group to plan which activities to set up and develop. We will work to create a respectful community with compassionate communication at its core."

Look out for the humble dandelion. Up until the 1800’s people pulled up grass to grow dandelions instead. Their medicinal and nutritional value was well known. Look up muddy faces dandelions for activities and cooking using dandelions. Did you know they open to great the morning and close at night? 🐝 flowers -spaces

A challenging but rewarding day in the woods replacing the old rope swings with new ones. One of the swings was so high we had to take it in turns to have a go at throwing the rope over. We were not sure we would ever manage it. school together https://thewoodschool.wordpress.com/

Building this week with woodschool was such a joy. The creativity and focus was really impressive. We ended the day with a photo of all the builders, huge smiles of pride on everyone’s faces.

Whittling, in my opinion, has to be one of the most satisfying crafts. It has been likened by some to ‘meditation of the hands’. It takes practice and perseverance to produce the more complex pieces such as spoons, but to start, whittling a stick with a point is a valid objective. https://thewoodschool.wordpress.com/build-wild/

OUR STORY

Freya, Matt and May have supported, mentored or parented children for the best part of 15 years. For us, some of the most magical moments in that journey has been watching children in deep play in the natural world. There is something about this play that cries out … ‘this is what life is meant to be’. In these moments we see children imagine, create and build. We see creativity in action.

The changeable, wild world that is ‘the outside’ invites this sort of exploration and immersion – so much more so than the indoors or designated play spaces. From our own adventures, we also know the delight that comes from mastering a skill and bringing a creation to life.

So, in dreaming up Build Wild, we wanted to create time and space for this kind of play and craft. We’ve been inspired, and are mentored, by the team at Woodland Tribe. https://www.woodlandtribe.org/
They, and our time at Wood School, have shown us it’s possible to hold a safe space where children can take risks, use tools independently, build skills and make their own playscapes.

We would love you to join us on this adventure.

Woodland Tribe offer a unique approach to children’s agency, construction and co-production that is capturing the public’s imagination. Anywhere, anytime we give children and adults hammers, saws, nails and a huge quantity of wood to build the adventure playground of their dreams.
