One long road to recovery.

Emad was severely injured when a building collapsed near him in Khan Younis, . What followed was a long and difficult journey.

Throughout his time in our hospital, UK-Med teams cared for his injuries, closely monitored his condition and supported him through each stage of recovery. ❤️‍🩹

🗨️ Emad warmly says the hospital became his “second home”.

His words are a powerful reminder that humanitarian healthcare is not only about clinical expertise - it is also about trust, compassion and caring for someone throughout the hardest moments of their journey.

And that’s a wrap on UK-Med’s Teams Week 2026! 💙

Last week colleagues from across UK-Med came together, shared lessons, strengthened connections and looked ahead to how we can keep improving the way we prepare, respond and learn.

Behind every UK-Med response is a team of people bringing skill, care and commitment to a shared mission: helping ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need when crises or disasters hit.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, shared their experience and made the week possible.

🎖️ Earlier this week, we celebrated UK-Med team members as they received the Humanitarian Medal, conferred by His Majesty King Charles.

This award recognises their extraordinary work responding to humanitarian emergencies overseas - bringing skill, compassion and vital care to communities facing some of the toughest circumstances.

We also want to recognise the incredible work of national health workers and local partners who work alongside our international staff every day, delivery vital care.

Congratulations to every recipient—and thank you for your dedication. 💙

Since UK-Med arrived in Gaza two and a half years ago, the team at our field hospital have conducted over 7,400 surgeries.

That’s people arriving with devastating injuries. Surgeons working through the night. Lives saved.

But this is a field hospital, made from temporary structures, which has been baked by summer sun and battered by winter storms.

We’ve delivered care no matter what.

Yesterday, we opened a new set of operating theatres.

We will provide more lifesaving and life-changing surgeries for people living in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Halima arrived at the temporary clinic with her 11-week-old baby after fleeing fighting in El Fasher, .

At the UK-Med and Relief International facility, midwife Wendy worked alongside national healthcare staff to provide vital care for her and her baby.

For Halima, that meant check-ups for her and her child, advice on vaccinations, a hygiene kit and malaria net — and someone to talk to.

Sudan is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. National staff are facing enormous pressure. UK-Med recently worked with Relief International to train and support national staff.

Strong outbreak responses begin with strong preparation.

Over the past month, UK-Med has supported preparedness training at a partner simulation centre in Nairobi, helping health professionals build the skills needed to respond safely in outbreak settings.

The training combines theory with hands-on simulation.

Participants were able to practise working in PPE, gaining first-hand experience of the challenges and discipline required to stay safe while caring for patients.

From the field: Heal2Play–Gaza | Ahmad stands on his own two feet after life-saving surgery and physiotherapy

After being severely injured and left in a critical condition due to an airstrike in Gaza, Ahmad was admitted to a UK-Med field hospital in 2025.

There, he received life-saving surgery and was fitted with an external fixator to stabilise his fractured leg bone. Following its removal last year, Ahmad received extensive physiotherapy and has regained the use of his leg.

In Gaza, thousands of children have suffered severe physical injuries in the ongoing conflict and subsequent collapse of adequate healthcare – this includes at least 4,000 children who have sustained amputations due to wounds from explosive weapons.

Heal2Play–Gaza is now providing medical and rehabilitative care to Palestinian children living with limb loss or severe extremity injuries in Gaza through two field hospitals and expert surgical and clinical teams.

Launched by Imperial College London and Community Jameel Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with UK-Med, KSRelief , the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office , and the Mérieux Foundation, Heal2Play–Gaza is in its first phase of delivering advanced surgical, prosthetic, and rehabilitation care to more than 1,000 children living with limb loss or severe extremity injuries in Gaza.
