From the field: Heal2Play–Gaza | Al-Mawasi, Gaza

Ayman regains his mobility after transformative physiotherapy for damaged spinal cord.

Ayman, 13-years-old, went to seek food for his family one day but did not return. His mother, Somar, was told that he was dead.

She later found him at Nasser Medical Complex, and described seeing him again as “the greatest blessing I would ever receive”.

Ayman had sustained severe spinal injuries, leaving him unable to speak, struggling to breathe, and completely reliant on a wheelchair after two months in intensive care.

Today, Heal2Play–Gaza is delivering specialised physiotherapy to Ayman at a UK-Med field hospital to help him regain his mobility.

According to his physiotherapists, Ayman is now able to walk with support, thanks to his determination, the medical staff, and his mother’s support.

While he still faces speech and breathing challenges and remains on the list for medical evacuation, his progress marks a major milestone.

Launched by Imperial College London and Community Jameel Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with UK-Med, KSRelief, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and the Fondation Mérieux, Heal2Play–Gaza is in its first phase of delivering advanced surgical, prosthetic, and rehabilitation care to more than 1,000 children living with limb loss or severe extremity injuries in Gaza – like Ayman.

World Humanitarian Day 2026 | RESPOND

Our most recent response was in Venezuela following the two catastrophic earthquakes in June.

Health services were damaged and overwhelmed. They urgently needed support.

This is what UK-Med does:

From the field: Heal2Play–Gaza | Al-Mawasi, Gaza

Shaban receives emergency surgery to rehabilitate his ankle.

When 14-year-old Shaban went to collect firewood one day to support his family, he returned home to his mother unable to walk, with a stray bullet in his ankle.

Originally from Khan Younis, Gaza, his family now lives in difficult conditions in Al-Mawasi. Every day, Shaban, or the ‘little businessman’, and his father would go out collecting firewood to sell.

Following his injury, Shaban spent three days in the UK-Med Type 2 field hospital, where he received urgent surgery to remove the bullet.

Heal2Play–Gaza is now providing vital rehabilitation support for Shaban, to help him recover.

According to the UK-Med team, Shaban’s mobility is improving, but requires sufficient rehabilitation and nutrition to prevent long-term immobility.
