LNER Coach Association Welcome to the LNER Coach Association page, we are a registered charity restoring beautiful coaches

The LNER Coach Association was formed in 1980 to obtain, restore and operate coaches from LNER and its constituent companies. It also looks after LNER and constituent companies' coaching stock privately owned by members. When fully restored, LNERCA and associated coaches are available for use or display on heritage railways including the North Yorkshire Moors, the Stainmore and the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railways.

East Coast Joint Stock 3rd class dining car no. 189.
Located at the Atkins shed, North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Pickering.

This week we welcomed back Sarah the Signwriter and she has been busy painting the ECJS crests on 189. We did have original transfers for these but as they are around 125 years old, they are very fragile and tend to disintegrate during the application process. Sarah was happy to come and use her skills in painting the crests using an original board mounted one as a reference point.

Meanwhile Marcus Woodcock has applied two of the ECJS monogram transfers. We had these manufactured from new by Butchers in 2021. This followed the NRM kindly arranging to photograph an original mounted example in the museum and one of our members, Mike Trice going through a painstaking process in replicating the artwork and creating digital vectors.

ECJS Diner 189 - Sun 10th May- NYMR Atkins shed Pickering.

Nick Smith and Archie Cullingworth painted the lower clerestory on the east side with brown Durashield.
Marcus Woodcock completed fitting the gangway hood at the north end.
We also welcomed a party from the Pullman Society who were on the NYMR to travel on the diner. One of our members, David Lowther organised this and we were happy to show them around 189. They were very impressed and want to keep in the loop with progress on the restoration.

Buffet car 641 - Sat 09th May - NYMR Pickering C&W yard.
Linda Harris and Gary Robinson did further deep cleaning of the interior including the kitchen.
We have a list of enhancements that we would like to do on 641 and there are a few small snags to remediate.

Some great news from the NYMR today.

We are pleased to share that, following a review at NYMR, a four-coach teak set of carriages will return to our Pickering to Grosmont services in time for the Annual Steam Gala (24th-27th September).

The four teak carriages in question are three LNERCA (LNER Coach Association) vehicles – brake coach 43567 and coaches 23956 and 56856 - plus NYMR’s own accessible coach, 42362.

Laura Strangeway, Chief Executive of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, commented: “We are very happy to see the teak carriages return to the track this year. The heritage appeal of the coaches is undeniable and I’m sure they will enhance our passengers’ visits to the Annual Steam Gala as they travel through the stunning scenery of the North York Moors National Park in such style.

“We would like to thank our colleagues at LNERCA, our Carriage and Wagon team and everyone who has championed the restoration of these stunning teak carriages.”

Further updates and information on the Annual Steam Gala will be available in due course via the NYMR website and social media channels.

Some photos taken in the carriage stable at Pickering on Saturday 18th April. The LNERCA had organised a working party to clean the interior of the teak set stabled there.
Although the teaks have not run in the last couple of years, it is important to keep the interiors clean and ensure there is no mould developing.
We also continue to work through any snags and bodywork issues that need remediation so that the carriages are ready if required and the mechanical work undertaken.

A quick update on the work being undertaken by Rampart Engineering at Barrow Hill, near Chesterfield, on NER Open Third No. 945.
Completing the vehicle is a joint project between SRC and our good friends in the LNER Coach Association (LNERCA).
Yesterday, we met up with Dave Cullingworth from the LNERCA at Rampart Engineering. We are pleased to report that the work on No. 945 is now complete - the overhauled bogies are back under the vehicle, the gangways have been reinstated and all the large steel bodyside panels have been replaced with tricoya.
We hope to shortly arrange transport for the vehicle to KSE where the remaining jobs will be completed and No. 945 will enter traffic lined-out in NER crimson lake livery.
Very many thanks to all involved.
