This Learning Disability Week, we’re highlighting some of the realities faced by people with learning disabilities; and how together, we can help change them.

πŸ’š People with a learning disability are 7 times more likely to feel lonely than people without a learning disability.

At Camphill Village Trust, we believe everyone deserves friendship, purpose and a place to belong. Our communities are designed around connection, meaningful opportunity and support tailored to the individual. In a recent survey, 97% of people said they are happy living in our communities.

πŸ’Ό Only 5% of people with a learning disability are currently in paid employment.

We’re helping address this through opportunities across our cafΓ©s, shops and social enterprises, where people can gain work experience and volunteering opportunities. We also employ people we support as paid Life of Opportunity Reviewers, ensuring their voices directly shape our communities and services.

At Ta**us Crafts, our Severnside Skills programmes provide vocational training and employment pathways for young people with SEN, helping build confidence, independence and future opportunities.

We exist to reimagine social care by harnessing the power of nature and community to empower people to live the life they choose.

Please help us spread awareness this Learning Disability Week by sharing this post and celebrating the strengths, talents and contributions of people with learning disabilities.

This Learning Disability Week, people supported in our Gloucestershire communities at Oaklands Park and Grange Village, together with members of The Shalom Network, have been sharing their voices through a special podcast episode [3 minutes 28 seconds]. πŸŽ™οΈ

The theme for this year is β€œDo you see me?”, highlighting the importance of recognising, valuing and listening to people with learning disabilities and the contributions they make in everyday community life.

In the podcast, people talk about:
πŸ’š their work experience opportunities
πŸ’š volunteering and job roles
πŸ’š friendships and community connections

People with learning disabilities play an active and important role in our communities every day, and this podcast is a chance to celebrate those contributions and experiences.

πŸ—¨οΈ"I work at Severnside... I work with the people I know, and we've gotten on well as a good team, and I learned to do work independently."
πŸ—¨οΈ"Our experiences show how active we are in local communities."

Take a listen and help us spread the message this Learning Disability Week.

Big thank you to Douglas, Charlotte, John, Michelle, Jenny, Yvonne and Harriet.
