🌿🚶♂️ Wellbeing Walk – Cawthorn Roman Camps 🚶♀️🌿
This week’s wellbeing walk took us to the fascinating Cawthorn Roman Camps on the edge of the North York Moors. It was a wonderful walk with great company, beautiful scenery, and plenty to discover along the way.
Cawthorn Roman Camps are some of the best-preserved Roman military earthworks in Britain. Built nearly 2,000 years ago, they are thought to have been used by Roman soldiers during their campaigns in northern England. The site includes the remains of temporary camps and a signal station, giving us a fascinating glimpse into life on the Roman frontier.
As we walked, we also spotted the delicate Common Field Speedwell brightening up the pathsides with its tiny blue flowers. Often called “bird’s-eye” because of its striking blue petals, this native wildflower has been a familiar sight in British fields and hedgerows for centuries. Its flowers only fully open in good weather, making them a lovely sign of sunny days.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for another enjoyable morning of fresh air, exercise, conversation, and exploration. Walking together is a great way to support both physical and mental wellbeing while discovering the amazing history and wildlife on our doorstep.
We meet every Wednesday at Kirkbymoorside Methodist Church at 9:45am for a 10:00am start. New walkers are always welcom
We are also starting a new walking session tomorrow, we will be meeting at the Hungate centre in Pickering with a 10 o’clock start, tomorrow’s walk will be round Sinnington, we hope to see you there.
