Another great History Walk arround Malton. I really enjoyed the Dickens walk. Seeing where his best friend worked, his brother stayed (while building the local railway). Amazing to stand outside Mr Smithsons solicitors buildings that most say he used to base Scrooges business on. PS Mr Smithson was a very generous man not like Scrooge.

Do you want to learn more about eighteenth century Malton and how it developed into a prospering market town?

Join us on our Georgian Boom Time town tour on 4th July!

We will consider the earlier layout of medieval Malton, before exploring how it developed into a Georgian market town, which became a prosperous regional market centre for nearly three centuries.

We will also discuss the people who made Malton grow into the town we know today, including statesmen, racehorse trainers, and artists, whose talents have contributed to the record of the town’s rich history.

📍The tour will commence outside Malton Museum at 11 am on Saturday 4th July.

🎟️Tickets can be purchased on our online booking page here: https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/online-booking/

They are so interesting the walking tours

Did you know Charles Dickens’ younger brother, Alfred, worked as a civil engineer on the construction of railway lines through Malton?

Alfred Lamert Dickens became a civil engineer in the 1840s, working on the development of the York-Scarborough line in 1843 and the Malton-Driffield line, which opened in 1851. He had an office in the Market Place, lived on Greengate, and later at Derwent Cottage on Scarborough Road, close to where the Driffield line was being constructed.

Alfred is just one of the people Charles visited when in Yorkshire. Find out about Dickensian Malton in our town tour next Saturday!

Tickets are available on our website here: https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/online-booking/
