Pre order this wonderful new title from local author Sally Coulthard to be published Feb 29th 2024. SIGNED copies will be available to collect or be sent on or after Feb 29th.
The untold story of rural Britain revealed through its artefacts. For most of human history, we were rural folk. Our daily lives were bound up with working the land, living within the rhythm of the seasons. We poured our energies into growing food, tending to animals and watching the weather.

Family, friends and neighbours were often one and the same. Life revolved around the village and its key spaces and places - the church, the green, the school and the marketplace. We all share this common heritage and yet we hear so little about it.

Rural life seems oddly invisible in the records - the daily routine of the peasant, the farmer and the craftsperson could never compete with the glamour of city life, war and royal drama. Records are absent. Lives unrecorded.

Stories untold. And yet there is one way we can learn about our rural past. Objects provide a direct route into the history of the countryside that no document can match; artefacts, in their tangibility, are touchstones that breathe life into its history.

Whether it's farming tools or children's toys, domestic objects or strange curios, the everyday objects made and used by the people who occupied the land reveal fascinating insights into an often-forgotten way of life. Birth, death, celebration, work, crime, play, medicine, beliefs, diet and our relationship with nature can all be read from these remnants of our past.

➡️🪐 THIS SATURDAY! 🪐⬅️

Meet Rex Burke, author of the brilliant Odyssey Earth trilogy — character driven space adventures with heart, soul and humour.

Rex will be in the shop to sign copies and chat about his writing and Sci-Fi. It’s a great chance to pop in with your books or learn more about the series!

We think this feelgood trilogy is a perfect way to escape the cold autumn — spend some time with characters who will take you on an adventure and make you laugh and smile on the journey! For fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide and Red Dwarf, and with the found-family vibes of The House in the Cerulean Sea.

No need to book, just turn up at Pickering Book Tree on Saturday. Rex will be there between 11am and midday.

An introduction to Persephone Books
Saturday February 10th 2024 7.30pm
2024 will be the 25th anniversary of this iconic publisher and we are delighted that Francesca Beauman from Persephone Books will be joining us for the evening.

Described by the Observer as ‘The nearest thing British publishing has to a cult’. Persephone Books has been reprinting neglected fiction and non-fiction, mostly by women writers and mostly dating from the mid-twentieth century, since 1999.
How do they choose which books to bring back into the light?
And why are all the covers of their books grey and what’s the significance of the patterned endpapers?
And why do some writers get forgotten and others don’t?
There will also be a discussion of the theme that unites every Persephone title: domestic feminism.
Tickets £7.50 Book in store or online with a booking fee
