Who needs an alarm clock when you have Weird Tusk scratching an itch right outside your room? 😅

Weird Tusk tried all kinds of moves against the acacia tree to get some relief, then stuck around for ‘breakfast’, munching on the very same tree before heading off.

We're not sure the team managed to get back to sleep after that early-morning wake-up call, but waking up to moments like this is all part of life at our research centre, and one of the reasons we love what we do!

Our founder, the late Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, never stopped looking for ways to better understand elephants. From a lone tent on the shores of Lake Manyara in 1965 to aerial surveys and GPS tracking, he treated new scientific technology as a way to satisfy his insatiable curiosity about elephants, and protect the giants he loved.

His story, and how the work continues today, is the cover feature of the October-November issue of Msafiri, Kenya Airways' inflight magazine.

Mamma mia, it’s happening! 🇮🇹 🐘

A Life Among Elephants, the award-winning film celebrating the life and work of STE’s Founder, Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton, continues its journey around the world. This Friday, 9 October, the film makes its Italian premiere at the Botanical Gardens of Rome.

Ahead of the screening, there will be a panel discussion on elephant conservation featuring STE’s Research Manager, Dr Giacomo D'Ammando, Professor Fabio Attorre of the University of Rome, and Dr Gianluca Zaffarano of Peace Parks Foundation in Mozambique.

From Iain’s pioneering research to the conservation work he inspired, it promises to be a special evening celebrating a remarkable life dedicated to elephants and looking at the work still ahead.

This 3D elephant model—the scientifically accurate representation of a 12,000-pound bull elephant named Sarara—is the culmination of a partnership with the nonprofit Save the Elephants and the latest in the effort by College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst Prof. Irschick to promote conservation through models big and small. 🐘

“If people get more used to what the animals actually are and what they do,” he said, “they become more invested in wanting to keep them around.”

The scans, which are available as digital files online, are largely designed to be educational tools. And the technology Irschick continues to evolve has scientific implications beyond printing.

“If you could just fly over a herd of elephants and say this is how much each one weighs…it would tell you a lot about the health of the animals,” said Irschick.

To scan Sarara, the team circled him in vehicles with GoPros, and the famous 32-year-old male from Northern Kenya’s Samburu region stepped right through. Unfortunately, the beloved animal was killed in a conflict with locals several weeks after the project was complete.

To continue the effort of better understanding elephants that Sarara started, Irschick plans to visit the San Diego Zoo to scan their herd of 13 elephants in October. Digital Life https://bit.ly/3VvHiWo

These calves put their energy to good use, head butting, shoving, face planting, and climbing all over each other. Growing up in an extended elephant family means there’s never a shortage of playmates. Calves are raised among siblings, cousins, aunts and other members of their close-knit family, and these bonds sit at the heart of elephant society, providing companionship, care and protection for life.

A young calf charges a flock of cattle egrets through the tall grass in Samburu National Reserve earlier this year when the park was greener. Egrets often follow elephant families, catching the insects flushed out as the herd walks and feeds. For this calf, though, the birds were an irresistible target. Play like this helps young elephants build coordination and confidence as they grow.

Who needs a chainsaw when you have Jonathan and Jipe? 🐘

When a large section of a tree recently fell onto the elephant collar display at our research centre in Samburu National Reserve, bull elephants, Jonathan and Jipe, stripped the bark and snapped the wood as they fed, leaving us with considerably less to clear! 😅

More importantly, they reminded us of the many ways elephants shape and interact with their environment - a good reason to appreciate them every day, not just today.

We appreciate you, Jonathan and Jipe! 🫶
