Nine-year-old Maria was patient #1 during our cleft surgery mission in Lagos, Nigeria, in November 2025. 💛

Born with a cleft lip, Maria received free, life-changing surgery from our volunteer medical team, giving her the chance to smile with confidence.

When Alliance for Smiles returned to Lagos in April this year, we had the joy of seeing Maria again for a follow-up. Her lip had healed beautifully, with barely a scar visible, and her transformation was incredible.

At just five months old, Astrid was the youngest patient on our 2024 medical mission to Retalhuleu, Guatemala. 💛

Born with a cleft lip, Astrid’s parents hoped to give her a future free from the physical, social, and emotional challenges many children with cleft conditions face.

Thanks to our incredible team of medical volunteers led by surgeon Dr. Ryan Brown, Astrid received life-changing cleft surgery during the mission.

In 2017, Alliance for Smiles traveled to Khulna, Bangladesh on a life-changing medical mission. 🇧🇩💙

During this mission, our dedicated team of volunteer surgeons, nurses, and medical professionals performed 74 cleft lip and palate surgeries for 67 patients – completely free of cost for families.

With a total surgical value of over $300,000, these procedures didn’t just transform smiles, they restored confidence, improved health, and changed lives forever.

Alliance for Smiles is excited to announce not one, but TWO upcoming cleft missions in India, bringing free life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries to children in need.

In 2023, Alliance for Smiles traveled to Hawassa, Ethiopia for our very first cleft mission in the country, and it’s where we met five-year-old Wubet. 💙

Wubet and her father journeyed farther than any other patient to reach our clinic. A farmer and father of six, he shared that many children in their village are born with cleft conditions, but surgery is simply out of reach. One private provider quoted 45,000 birr (about $275), far beyond what he could afford.

Determined to help his daughter, relatives pooled together 2,400 birr (just $14) to fund their two-day journey to Hawassa. At Alliance for Smiles, we not only provided Wubet with free, life-changing cleft surgery, we also reimbursed their travel costs.

Quiet, calm, and full of trust, Wubet underwent surgery and began her journey toward a brighter future.

Seven-year-old Arr and his family traveled four days by car to reach our cleft care mission in Yangon, Myanmar.

They made the long journey with one hope: a chance to change Arr’s life.

Arr loved school, but he was often bullied because of his cleft lip. His family dreamed that surgery would not only repair his smile, but restore his confidence.

During our 2014 mission, our volunteer medical team made that dream possible.
After surgery, Arr opened his arms wide and smiled – full of joy, full of hope. 💙

Through tears, his grandmother told us: “You have given my grandson a new life. He won’t be ashamed and he can live more fully.”

At Alliance for Smiles, cleft care goes beyond surgery, it’s about building lasting impact. 💙

A key focus of our work is strengthening local healthcare systems through education and training. During our 2025 mission in Sohag, Egypt, our incredible team of medical and non-medical volunteers led hands-on trainings and lectures for over 200 physicians, nurses, and students.

Across three tracks – surgery, anesthesiology, and nursing – participants explored comprehensive cleft care from infant to adult cases, pain management, and post-anesthesia care.

Because sustainable global health means sharing knowledge, building skills, and learning from one another.
