Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision loss, but they often develop so gradually that many people don't notice the changes at first.

Blurred vision, increased glare, faded colors, and difficulty driving at night can all be early signs. The good news? Regular eye exams can help detect cataracts before they begin interfering with daily life.

This Cataract Awareness Month, take a moment to schedule your next comprehensive eye exam and encourage a loved one to do the same. Protecting sight starts with paying attention to the small changes.

Many eye diseases develop without noticeable symptoms, which is why preventive care matters at every age. Healthy Vision Month is an opportunity to encourage family and friends to prioritize their eye health and make vision care part of their regular wellness routine.

At the All May See Foundation, we are proud to support programs at the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology and Francis I. Proctor Foundation that are advancing vision research, education, and patient care to help protect sight for generations to come.

Congratulations to Nisha Acharya, MD, MS, on her outstanding Weisenfeld Award Lecture at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual convening - ARVO 2026 in Denver, CO.

Dr. Acharya was introduced by Jacque Duncan, MD, Chair of the University of California San Francisco Department of Ophthalmology, before presenting “From Clinic to Evidence: Advancing Research in Ocular Infection and Inflammation.”

Her lecture highlighted how patient-centered clinical observations can lead to rigorous, evidence-based research that improves care for people living with ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases.
The presentation featured groundbreaking prospective clinical trials in uveitis, along with population-level research examining herpes zoster ophthalmicus, disease burden, complications, and the impact of vaccination on ocular and neurologic health.

As the Elizabeth C. Proctor Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF and Director of the Uveitis and Ocular Inflammatory Disease Service at the F.I. Proctor Foundation, Dr. Acharya continues to advance translational research that meaningfully impacts patient care and clinical practice.

As part of a weeklong gathering of 11,000 attendees from 72 countries, ARVO 2026 highlighted the power of collaboration, discovery, and innovation in vision science.

Congratulations to Dr. Acharya on this well-deserved recognition.

This Mother’s Day weekend, we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, mentors, and loved ones who shape lives with compassion, strength, and hope. 💐

At All May See Foundation, we are reminded every day that the gift of sight changes more than vision. It helps families stay connected, supports independence, and creates new possibilities for the future.

Thank you to all who nurture, guide, and care for others so generously. Your compassion inspires our mission to advance vision research, education, and patient care at UCSF Ophthalmology and the Francis I. Proctor Foundation.

Wishing you a joyful and peaceful Mother’s Day. 💛

A split second can change your vision for life. Many sports-related eye injuries happen from impact with balls, equipment, or other players—but most can be avoided with the right protection.

This April, during Sports Eye Safety Month, make protective eyewear part of your routine every time you play.

A newly published study in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas highlights a powerful solution to a persistent challenge in U.S. healthcare: the cost barrier to vision-saving treatment.

The ACCESS program (Alleviating Costs for Critical Eye Specialty Services) provides essential ophthalmic care at no cost when insurance falls short—and the results are transformative:
👁️ Visual acuity improved by an average of 5 lines
👁️ Visual disability reduced from 67% to 6%

We are proud to see this important work published, co-authored by Ryan A. Morton; Irene J. Pak, MD Candidate; Alice S. Tang, MD/PhD Candidate; Deborah Chesky, President, All May See Foundation; Hemal K. Kanzaria, MD; Madeline Yung, MD; and Tyson N. Kim, MD, PhD.

Gould Syndrome Awareness Day is April 12.

At UCSF, groundbreaking research led by Douglas B. Gould, PhD is advancing our understanding of this rare genetic disease—bringing us closer to new treatments that could preserve sight and improve lives.

While federal funding plays a role, philanthropy is essential to accelerate this work. Your support helps launch new studies, sustain research momentum, and move discoveries from the lab to patients faster.

Join us in raising awareness—and hope.
