Excavation Opportunitites at Cwmffwrn Farm, Abbeycwmhir Powys
Our Experience days have been so popular this year that we sold out very quickly. Fortunately, we have been able to add some more dates this July.
Experience Days – get a taste of what excavation is about
Each day is stand-alone and attendees can book for 1 or more days. On each day attendees will be able to experience a taste of what an excavation is about with plenty of excavation time @ £50/day
Suitable for those who have always wanted to have a go, or would enjoy a day out in the countryside learning something new, or have enjoyed helping on an excavation in the past and would like to spend a day or two on-site.
We also have opportunities as an Excavation Trainee where you will work closely with the professional archaeologists on-site.
Suitable for people exploring whether archaeology is a career for them, a refresher for those who excavated a long time ago and want to renew skills, or people who want to volunteer on excavations and feel more confident.

This summer the Abbey Cwmhir Heritage Trust will be running the fourth excavation season of a settlement site within the home grange of the Cistercian abbey in the beautiful hills of north Radnorshire. Abbey Cwmhir is celebrated as the burial place of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the Last Prince of Wales, in 1282.

In 2026 we anticipate that there will be further finds of pottery and we are also aware that contexts containing charcoal remain to be explored, including evidence of the hearth inside the building. For this reason we are seeking crowdfunding towards covering the costs of radiocarbon dating and pottery analysis.

Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Aim: To fund specialist services including radiocarbon dating and pottery analysis relating to the archaeological excavation of an earthwor
