The centre provides a space for schools, groups and families to learn about south Essex’s fantastic ancient woodlands in an interactive way. The Belfairs Woodland Centre is a partnership between Essex Wildlife Trust and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Interreg, Maxigreen project. The centre itself will be a focal point for a range of events and activ

ities for the whole community and provide volunteering opportunities, refreshments and an education hall.

Workers in the Woods!
Wood ants are predatory insects and feed on a variety of other insects including caterpillars, beetles, and other ant species.

Ninety percent of their diet however, comes from honeydew produced by aphids which feed on trees and shrubs. Aphids feed on tree sap which is high in sugars and as they feed they excrete any excess sugars as honeydew. Ants “milk” the aphids of their honeydew, and in return protect the aphids from predators and even move them to better feeding grounds.
