BRIAN IS A HILARIOUSLY HEROIC HANNAY!

Brian Paterson plays Richard Hannay in Tryst Theatre's forthcoming show "The 39 Steps".

It's the latest in a long line of characters Brian has portrayed brilliantly on stage in the last twenty years with Tryst.

Among many others, he has been a passionate Robert Burns, a neurotic Basil Fawlty, a tortured Hamlet and most recently a comically incompetent Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

So tell us about Richard Hannay, Brian.

"Well, he's a bachelor living in London, bored and restless with life. A mysterious German woman is murdered in his flat which pushes him into extraordinary international conspiracies as he evades pursuers across the Scottish Highlands.

"We find that he's calm, intelligent, resourceful, adaptable and thinks quickly on his feet. He likes puzzles and smokes a pipe. He also jumps effortlessly down from the Forth Bridge, gets handcuffed to a beautiful woman, is chased by a plane and saves the British Empire before teatime. So he's both ordinary and extraordinary. What's not to like! It's a fabulous fun part to play."

Brian plus Rhona McColl, Brian Tripney, Steve Baker and Jim Allan play over 150 characters in this fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy spoof including spies, policemen, evil Germans, femmes fatales, mysterious men under street lamps, shadow puppets, train passengers and hoteliers, switching effortlessly between these characters, genders and accents in seconds using lightning-fast changes.

RHONA IS MAD...ABOUT THE 39 STEPS!

Our lovely mad extraordinary and hugely talented Rhona McColl will celebrate twenty years with Tryst when she steps on-stage next month in "The 39 Steps".

In that time she has taken on lots of meaty roles - ranging from Magrit in The Steamie to Polly the waitress in Fawlty Towers and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.

In The 39 Steps, along with Brian Paterson, Jim Allan, Brian Tripney and Steve Baker, Rhona plays three characters - Annabella Schmidt, Margaret and Pamela.

Annabella is a sharp, fast-talking German secret agent, Margaret is a shy and rather downtrodden Scottish farmer's wife and Pamela is a poised, upper-class, somewhat uptight Londoner.

Rhona says: "I love the challenge of rapidly switching between entirely different characters, accents, physicality and costumes...not to mention the amount of "business" we all have to do!

"I've longed to do this play for ages and rehearsals are tremendous fun. We are all so looking forward to performing this classic "film-noir" comedy diamond for our audiences in Behind The Wall.

"And there's only one word to add: "Altnashellach!!!!"...but you'll have to buy a ticket and come along to find out what it means!"

ESPIONAGE! INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACIES! MURDER! MILKMEN!

Tryst Theatre's new November show in Behind the Wall is "The 39 Steps" adapted by Patrick Barlow.

It's a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy spoof based on Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film and John Buchan’s thriller novel.

It comes after the fun of the club's last show, Dull Men Go Dating.

In The 39 Steps, Richard Hannay, a man bored with life, meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon a mysterious organisation called “The 39 Steps” is hot on Hannay's trail.

Balancing suspense with slapstick, the frantic manhunt takes the audience from the bustling streets of London to the remote Scottish Highlands.

Five actors - Rhona McColl, Brian Paterson, Brian Tripney, Steve Baker and Jim Allan - play over 150 characters including a memory man, spies, policemen, evil Germans, femmes fatales, mysterious men under street lamps, shadow puppets, train passengers and hoteliers, switching effortlessly between these characters, genders and accents in seconds using lightning-fast changes.

With a touch of Monty Python-style humour, there's an onstage plane crash, handcuffs and some good old-fashioned romance. And using various handy props, they cleverly evoke everything from a train to the Forth Bridge.

Director Jim Allan said: "Fast, fun and frothy, The 39 Steps is an action-packed whodunnit bursting with madcap energy, sheer physical skill, clowning and non-stop laughs.

"It won two Tony Awards and the Laurence Olivier Award for the Best New Comedy so it certainly is top-quality live theatre and I know our Behind the Wall audiences will love it."
