Community Works and Adur Voluntary Action have joined forces to launch ‘Communities Together’:

The Communities Together project brings together diverse communities, local groups and organisations to share knowledge, build stronger connections and strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This event will provide opportunities to connect, share experiences and learn from one another, while exploring how inclusive practice can become part of everyday work.

Together, we’ll build the skills, confidence and partnerships needed to create safer and more welcoming spaces, and support positive change across our communities.

🌊 Happy World Rivers Day!

Today we’re giving a little love to the waterway that puts the Adur in Adur – our very own River Adur. 💙

Did you know…

🌊 It flows for around 20 miles before reaching the sea at Shoreham-by-Sea.

✌️ It begins as two separate arms, which meet just north of Henfield.

🏺 It’s been an important local trade route since Roman times.

🌙 The river is tidal all the way beyond Henfield.

🐦 And the Adur Estuary is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, providing important saltmarsh and mudflat habitat for wading birds and other wildlife.

Perhaps our favourite fact, though? The name Adur is said to come from the Celtic word Dwyr, meaning… water. Sometimes the simple names are the best. 😄

Whether you walk beside it, cycle along it, paddle on it or simply stop to watch the wildlife, the River Adur is a pretty special part of our local landscape.

📢 Important Announcement

After 2.5 years working from our shared Lancing office, AVA is sad to announce that we have been asked to leave the space.

We would like to thank the local community for their support and visits over the past few years, we have loved meeting with you all and supporting local groups from the space.

💚 Thankfully, Lancing Parish Council have come to our rescue and have provided us with an office space to rent upstairs at the Parish Hall.

We are extremely grateful for their support as this means AVA will be able to continue our work supporting local groups, matching volunteers with volunteering opportunities, and providing Digital Support Sessions and our Repair Cafe.

📍 From Monday 2nd November, our new address will be:

The office is accessed via a separate entrance, through the brown front door behind the war memorial, you will see our sign outside.

Our next Repair Café Lancing takes place on Saturday 19 September, from 10am–11.30am.

If you have a broken household item that could be given a new lease of life, our friendly volunteer repairers will see if they can help. Repairing rather than replacing items can save money and help reduce waste going to landfill.

⚠️ Please note: We are now fully booked for electrical repairs at the September session, so unfortunately we cannot accept any more electrical items.

We do still have availability for non-electrical repairs, so if you have a suitable item that needs some TLC, please get in touch.

We’re not just behind a desk.

One of the most important parts of AVA’s work is getting out into the communities we support.

You’ll find us working from community spaces, running activities, attending local events, meeting voluntary organisations and simply having conversations with people about what’s happening where they live.

Because good community support doesn’t always start with someone filling in a form or sending an email.

Sometimes it starts with a conversation.

And sometimes the best way to understand what a community needs is simply to be there.

Sometimes someone is thinking:

“I’d really like to do something useful with my time.”

And somewhere nearby, a community organisation is thinking:

“We could really use another pair of hands.”

A big part of AVA’s work is bringing those two people together.

Through our Volunteer Centre, we help people discover opportunities that match their interests, skills and circumstances – while helping local organisations find the volunteers who make so much community activity possible.

And because not everyone wants to do everything online, people can talk to us face-to-face too.

Connecting people who want to help with places where they can make a difference.
