We are a group of parents and primary-school aged children embarking on a home educating journey in Shoreham by Sea. We are known collectively as Shoreham Home Educators (SHEd); a voluntary not-for-profit organisation. Our group is housed at the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre in Shoreham. The venue overlooks the River Adur and is situated on the recreation ground. We have 2 rooms; one large hall for
physical activites, arts/crafts and free play with a balcony overlooking the water. There is also private acces down to the gardens from here. We also have a smaller room for Spanish and Ukelele classes as well as a dining room, a fully equipped kitchen and access to exclusive use toilets and showers. The entire area allocated to SHEd activities is secure and there is no public access. SHEd’s aim is to offer a variety of outdoor and indoor activities for our home educated children, including Spanish and Ukelele lessons, Yoga and Gymnastics, Art and Craft sessions and Climbing Club, as well as Forest School and 'Mud Matters' in the Spring/Summer months. Each of these sessions are provided by outside tutors. We also enjoy outdoor games, nature walks, free play, storytime, baking and sensory/messy play which we provide ourselves. Our external tutors are all CRB checked and Insured and hold First Aid qualifications, where applicable. One of our greatest hopes is to ignite a passion for life long learning in our children and ourselves. Life long learning; for the sheer joy of it. Life long learning; to enable us to meet the constantly changing demands of the twenty first century. Through our varied hands-on activities, offered under our guardianship but developed by our children, we support an holistic approach to learning; one that addresses the creative, academic, physical and emotional well being of our members. Above all, we want our children to have fun at SHEd; to develop self-confidence and self-respect, to enjoy learning with and from their peers – no matter their age – and to provide a small and co-operative social setting which encourages flexibility, self-relience and a deep consideration for our environment and other people.
