🦔📚 LITTLE MINDS, BIG LOVE FOR WILDLIFE! 💚🌿

Today, Josh and Madeleine had the pleasure of visiting Gainsborough Library to deliver a special wildlife education session! 🐦

We spent the morning talking about the amazing wildlife we share our gardens and countryside with, how we care for animals in need, and the equipment we use every day at the rescue.

The children were absolutely brilliant! 🥹 They were engaged, curious, asked lots of fantastic questions, and got involved in the activities. It’s always so lovely to see young people taking an interest in wildlife and wanting to learn how they can help.

A huge thank you to Fabiola and the library team for organising such a wonderful session. The effort they put into the morning, including providing an amazing assortment of craft materials, refreshments and treats, was genuinely appreciated.

Wildlife rescue isn’t just about saving animals. It’s about education, prevention, and inspiring the next generation to protect the natural world. 🦊🦉

If today’s session has inspired even one child to look a little closer at the wildlife around them, then we’ve achieved something special.

Thank you for having us!

If you are interested in a free educational session (schools, colleges, community events etc…) please do get in touch 👇

🌪️🦉 STORM BOELO: A BARN OWL’S STORY

Storm Boelo has certainly made its presence known over the weekend, and unfortunately, our wildlife can feel the effects of severe weather just as much as we do.

On Sunday, we were contacted about this beautiful barn owl, who had been found grounded following the strong winds and adverse weather.

We suspect the challenging conditions may have disrupted its ability to hunt and fly safely, leaving them vulnerable and in need of a helping hand.

Thankfully, after some warmth, rest and supportive care, we’re delighted to report that this little one has perked up brilliantly! 🥹

We’re now hopeful that this stunning bird will be ready to return to the skies very soon.

⛈️ Severe weather can pose real challenges for wildlife. Strong winds and heavy rain can make flying, hunting and finding shelter much more difficult, particularly for birds of prey.

If you find a wild animal that appears injured, exhausted or unusually grounded during or after a storm, please seek advice from a wildlife rescue rather than assuming it will recover on its own.

🦔 CAPESWILDLIFERESCUE – ADMISSIONS REOPENING SOON! 🐦

As we prepare to reopen admissions, here’s a quick guide to how the process will work.

📞 1. Call us first
Please call the rescue before bringing an animal to us. If we don’t answer straight away, please be patient — we’ll aim to call you back. 07553201825. You can message us via Facebook too.

If the animal needs urgent help and you can’t reach us, contact another wildlife rescue or take it to a local veterinary practice, which will accept wildlife casualties free of charge. You can also visit https://directory.helpwildlife.co.uk/

As a last resort, you can WhatsApp or message 07482390033 (Josh’s personal number). Please note that Josh works full-time and cannot always reply immediately.

📋 2. Telephone triage
We’ll ask questions about the animal, where it was found and its condition to determine the best course of action. This may mean admission to us, referral to another rescue, a veterinary visit, or advice to leave the animal where it is. For example, healthy fledglings often can remain with their parents rather than be taken into care.

Occasionally, a triage volunteer may call you back to discuss the most appropriate next steps.

⏰ 3. Your appointment
If we can admit the animal, you’ll be given an arrival time. Please don’t arrive without an agreed appointment.

🚗 4. Arriving
Our main gates may be closed for security, so you may need to call us for access. The rescue is clearly signed, please park on the right-hand side of the lane and ring the doorbell on the gate to alert our onsite volunteers.

📝 5. Handover
You’ll sign a brief admission form, then the animal will be handed over to our team and admitted into our care.

💚 We’re a small, volunteer-run rescue, and admissions depend on our capacity and the animal’s needs. Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support as we get ready to welcome new admissions!

To a hedgehog, looking for a safe, cosy place to hibernate, a bonfire pile looks like the perfect ready-made home. They don't know we plan to set it alight! 🦔 🚫 🔥

Three simple steps can help protect them this November 👇
🚫 STOP: Do you need a bonfire this year? The fewer bonfires there are, the fewer wildlife casualties there will be.

🫳 MOVE: If you do go ahead, build the bonfire on the day you plan to light it. If materials have already been collected, move them to a clear site, as hedgehogs, other wildlife or pets may be hiding inside.

🔦 CHECK: Before lighting, check the whole pile carefully. Shine a torch inside and gently lift each section with a pole or broom. Never use a spade or fork, as these can cause serious injuries. Listen for the huffing sound of a hedgehog.

STOP. MOVE. CHECK!

💚 HELP US BUILD A SECOND WILDLIFE HOSPITAL BUILDING 🦔🦉

At CapesWildlifeRescue, our mission has always been simple: to give sick, injured and vulnerable wildlife the care, compassion and second chance they deserve.

But as our rescue continues to grow, so does the need for suitable facilities. The rescue has grown at a rate I never imagined. Our busiest day received over 120 calls! That is absolutely insane.

Behind every admission is an animal that needs somewhere safe to recover, receive treatment and, hopefully, return to the wild. Providing that care takes space, appropriate facilities and the ability to manage patients with different needs.

That’s why we’re launching a new fundraiser to help us create a second wildlife hospital building. 💚

🏥 Our fundraising target is £3,000.

The money raised will go towards the building and the essentials needed to get it ready for use, helping us expand our hospital capacity and improve the facilities available to the wildlife in our care.

This isn’t about building something extravagant. It’s about investing in practical facilities that will make a genuine difference to the animals who depend on us.

As an independent wildlife rescue, projects like this simply aren’t possible without the generosity of our supporters. Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to making this happen.

💚 Can you help us build a better future for wildlife?

If you’re able to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. If you can’t donate right now, sharing this post can help us reach someone who can.

Every donation, every share and every bit of support helps us move closer to our goal.

Together, we can create more space, improve our facilities and give more wildlife the chance to recover and return to the wild. 🦔🐦🦉

💚 IMPORTANT REMINDER: CAPESWILDLIFERESCUE POLICIES 🦔🦉

We would like to remind our supporters, finders and the general public of some important policies regarding the running and security of CapesWildlifeRescue.

🩺 OUR PRIORITY IS ANIMAL WELFARE

We are a very busy wildlife rescue caring for vulnerable animals requiring feeding, cleaning, medication, treatment, rehabilitation and, in some cases, intensive care. Our time and resources must be prioritised accordingly.

Providing individual updates to finders is one of our lowest priorities. While we understand that people care about the animals they have found, we cannot guarantee individual updates, photographs or responses to messages. News and recovery stories will be shared on our social media channels whenever possible.

🏡 WE ARE NOT A ZOO

CapesWildlifeRescue is a wildlife rehabilitation facility, not a visitor attraction. We are not open to the public, and we do not offer drop-in visits or opportunities to view the animals.

🚫 NO UNAUTHORISED SITE ACCESS

Unauthorised individuals are strictly prohibited from entering the rescue site. This is essential for animal welfare, biosecurity, the safety of our volunteers and the security of our facilities.

All wildlife admissions must be arranged with us in advance and take place in our designated admission area. Members of the public must not enter the site or attempt to access enclosures.

🔒 SITE SECURITY

We take the security of our site extremely seriously. Enclosures, gates and access points are kept secure. Additional measures, including CCTV are used to help protect the site and the animals in our care. I emphasise this point due to unsocial behaviour being conducted around our site (on private property). This is not acceptable.

💚 PLEASE RESPECT OUR TEAM

Our rescue relies on a dedicated team of people working hard to give wildlife a second chance. We ask everyone to respect our boundaries, policies and limited resources.

We appreciate every person who helps an animal in need, and we are grateful for the support our community gives us. However, these policies are in place for important reasons and are not optional.

Our responsibility is to the wildlife entrusted to our care. Their welfare, safety and rehabilitation will always come first.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sadly, a short while ago, we were contacted about a snake that had been attacked by a cat and was in need of urgent help.

Unfortunately, despite the finders’ efforts to get the snake to us, it sadly passed away before arriving at the rescue. 💔

Cat attacks can cause devastating injuries to wildlife, and even when external wounds appear minimal, bites and scratches can introduce bacteria and cause serious underlying trauma.

Although this little one didn’t make it to us in time, we’re grateful to the finders for trying to get them help. Every animal deserves a chance, and we know how upsetting it can be when, despite your best efforts, the outcome isn’t what you hoped for.

❤️ A gentle reminder: If you find a wild animal that has been attacked by a cat, please seek professional wildlife advice as soon as possible. Even if injuries look minor, prompt assessment and treatment can make a difference.

Sadly, we can’t save every life that comes through our doors, but we will always do our best for every animal that needs us.

Rest peacefully, little one. 🐍

Behind every wildlife casualty is a team of people committed to giving that animal the best possible chance of recovery.

At CapesWildlifeRescue, we believe wildlife rehabilitation involves far more than providing food, warmth and shelter. It requires careful assessment, appropriate clinical care, close monitoring and an understanding of the individual needs of every animal in our care.

🩺 Clinical skills. Compassionate care. Veterinary support.

Our team works hard to provide a structured approach to wildlife rehabilitation, from initial assessment and ongoing observations to supportive nursing care and monitoring each patient’s progress.

We are also incredibly fortunate to have an on-site veterinary team, providing valuable veterinary expertise and support to our wildlife patients. Having veterinary input as part of our rescue’s approach helps us work towards appropriate, welfare-led decisions at every stage of rehabilitation.

Every member of our team plays an important role. From the people providing daily husbandry and monitoring to those delivering hands-on care, it is that collective effort that makes a difference to the animals who arrive at our door.

Wildlife rescue isn’t always easy. Recovery can take time, progress isn’t always straightforward, and sadly, not every story has the outcome we hope for. But every animal deserves to be treated with care, dignity and compassion.

💚 Our mission is simple: to give injured, sick and vulnerable wildlife the best possible chance of returning to the wild.

We’re proud of the dedication of our team, grateful for the expertise of our veterinary colleagues, and committed to continually developing the standard of care we provide.

If you’d like to follow our patients’ journeys, see the work that happens behind the scenes, and support our mission to help wildlife, we’d love to have you as part of our community.

Follow CapesWildlifeRescue, share our work, and help us give wildlife a voice.
