Retraining of Racehorses:
-raises funds from within the racing industry to help support the charitable retraining and rehoming of former racehorses
- helps provide facilities for the care, retraining and rehoming of former racehorses
-promotes the adaptabilit

y of racehorses to other equestrian activities

🌟 Partnerships of the Month – Lydia and her two horses Claires Choice & Recoded 🌟

This month we’re celebrating Lydia, Maia (Claires Choice) and Ricky (Recoded). Lydia has been a great supporter or RoR taking part in lots of events and also being very supportive to other members 💚

Having worked with racehorses since 2010, Lydia decided in 2018 that she wanted a horse simply to have fun with. What arrived was not the Connemara she had imagined, but a 2-year-old filly named Claires Choice, now known as Maia. After a short racing career, Maia became Lydia’s first RoR horse and has proved to be the ultimate all-rounder, enjoying dressage, showing, jumping, fun rides and even side saddle.

After a period of rehabilitation following lameness, Maia is slowly getting back to enjoying life — and in March she gained a rather unexpected little brother! ❤️

Enter Recoded (Ricky), an 8-year-old former hurdler trained by Harry Derham. Lydia met Ricky through her work with The British Racing School and, despite being a little too exuberant for student rides, she quickly fell in love with him. Ricky has now begun his own RoR journey, enjoying beach trips, camping and, most importantly, RoR club mornings and afternoons.

Lydia is also keen to highlight the fantastic support available through the RoR community in Newmarket, particularly from Louise Robson, Jody Sole and one of RoR's fantastic volunteers, Sophie, whose understanding of thoroughbreds and their racing backgrounds helps riders of all experience levels enjoy their next chapter.

From a 15.2hh ex-Flat horse to a 17hh+ ex-National Hunt giant, Lydia’s journey proves that there really is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to life after racing!

There’s still time to enter the RoR Dressage Championship and Tattersalls RoR Showing Series Qualifier, taking place at the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to compete with your former racehorse at one of the highlights of the equestrian calendar, in the spectacular setting of Blenheim Palace.

Join us for an informative and interactive session featuring a range of practical stations, including:

✨ Guided stretches and exercises to support your horse's muscle development

✨ Vet-led sessions on effective pole work and managing common conditions

✨ Advice on safely returning your horse to work after a break or following retirement from racing

This is also a great opportunity to learn more about RoR, connect with fellow owners and riders, and gain valuable insights into caring for and retraining former racehorses.
