Little Bear is busy tucking into his delicious dinner, and doesn’t he just look adorable in the golden autumn sun?

As our smallest resident, little is also one of our bravest, so spooky season doesn't phase him one bit! In fact, one of Bear’s absolute favourite things to do is a good scavenger hunt, so he can’t wait to get stuck into the fun this weekend.

Heading into a spook-tacular Halloween weekend with plenty to see and do onsite, come and visit Bear and his friends in the Shetland paddock, take part in our scary scavenger hunt, and enjoy a wonderful autumn day out. How can a South Wales local boy with 15 years of service, a television appearance and a love of mints be one of our least sponsored horses?

Max spent his career with South Wales Police, taking part in community patrols, searches, sporting events, protests and important ceremonial occasions. Brave enough to remain steady in difficult situations yet gentle and patient with children and families, he became affectionately known as Maxy and Maximus by his teammates.

Now enjoying a well-earned retirement at The Horse Trust, Max is sociable, easy-going and always pleased to receive some fuss or a mint.

As temperatures fall and grass growth slows, good quality forage becomes even more important for our residents.

This year has been particularly challenging. Our own hay yield is significantly lower, while the cost of buying hay has risen.

But the horses still need to eat.

Top of the morning to you from Annie and Vodka! ☀️🐴

These two are (im)patiently waiting for their breakfast this morning! After a drizzly start to the day, they are more than ready for their food to arrive and aren't afraid to let their care team know it!

Annie just wanted to pop by and say a big Monday hello to all her wonderful followers and everyone who has been looking out for her. Seeing her so bright, happy, and eager for her morning routine brings a smile to all our faces.

We’re sad to share that we’ve said goodbye to our much-loved resident, Silverdale.

Affectionately known as ‘Princess’ and ‘Bubble’, Silverdale spent years serving with Lancashire Constabulary, supporting officers through challenging duties and ceremonial occasions with her calm, dependable nature.

After retiring to The Horse Trust in 2016, she enjoyed a well-earned rest, specialist care and precious time with her best friend, Empress. A lover of ginger biscuits, she brought so much joy to those lucky enough to know her.

At the age of 30, Silverdale leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, friendship and trust. She will be deeply missed by everyone who cared for her, both during her working life and throughout her retirement.

Rest peacefully, Princess. Thank you for everything. HTx 💚

Well, if we didn’t know winter was upon us already, we certainly do now!

Nelson and Joey are notorious for their love of a good mud bath. Perhaps it stems from their days in the police, working undercover and blending into their surroundings… although we’re not sure this was quite what their former colleagues had in mind!

We can only imagine the grooms’ faces when they came across these two, but we also know that when it comes to our retired residents, a good roll in the mud can be a lovely sign that they’re feeling comfortable and content.

So, while the mud might be a groom’s worst nightmare, for Nelson and Joey, it’s simply a case of a little winter fun! HTx💚

As the seasons change, so do our horses' and donkeys' habits!

Our herd loves to forage, taking full advantage of the hedgerows and trees around the fields. Seasonal shifts naturally encourage them to explore their environment and discover fresh, tasty treats tucked away.

Why is foraging so great for them? Foraging provides natural enrichment, keeping our residents minds active and encouraging natural movement. Grazing on diverse plants, bark, and leaves provides varied fiber and nutrients, mimicking natural wild behaviours keeping the herd calm and content.
