At The Alcohol & Drug Service, we understand that every challenge comes with a unique story, and every story involves a person who deserves to be listened to, supported, and treated with dignity. Members of the LGBTQ+ community often encounter obstacles when seeking help for alcohol or drug use, but remember, you are not alone.

We provide safe, confidential, and inclusive support not just during Pride, but throughout the entire year. 💬💜

🏳️‍🌈 If you or someone dear to you needs assistance, we’re here to listen.

The LGBT community can be affected by alcohol and drug use in different ways, often as a result of stress, stigma, and experiences of discrimination. For some people, substances may feel like a way to cope with emotional pressure or isolation, which can also affect mental wellbeing and make it harder to seek help. A more compassionate approach is to recognise these challenges and ensure support is welcoming, affirming, and free from judgment.

Luke Hart was the guest speaker at this year’s ADS Staff Conference, and his story truly touched everyone in the room.

Luke is a powerful advocate who is helping to raise awareness of domestic abuse, coercive control, domestic homicide, and the warning signs that so often go unnoticed. Following the tragic murder of his mother, Claire, and sister, Charlotte, by his father in 2016, Luke and his brother Ryan have dedicated their lives to educating others about the realities of abuse and the devastating consequences of controlling behaviour.

His message was a reminder that abuse is not always visible. Sometimes the most dangerous situations can appear completely normal from the outside. It highlights how important it is to recognise the signs, ask difficult questions, and never ignore something that doesn't feel right. As Luke often says, we shouldn't just look for violence — we should look for controlling environments.

Thank you, Luke, for sharing your story and for having the courage to lead conversations that many people find difficult to have. Your work is helping to save lives and create greater awareness of an issue that affects far too many people. ❤️
