Following on from our post last week, sharing old photos of the demolition of the old Primitive Methodist Church on South Lane … here are some images from the demolition of the Congregational Church from about 1979.

The church stood on the corner of Station Road and South Lane, where Laburnum Court now stands, and was opened in 1900.

Another fantastic and busy event last night, sharing a collection of stories and images from Hessle’s history, including lottery winners, demolished & adapted buildings, and 2-way traffic chaos on Prestongate!

Our next meeting will be on 20th August, when we’ll learn about Christopher Pickering, businessman and philanthropist who gave his name to Pickering Park amongst many other things.

Thanks to the local resident who brought us these amazing photos from 1992 … showing the demolition of the beautiful Primitive Methodist church in South Lane.

It had been opened in 1909, on the site of a ‘tin tabernacle’ Congregationalist church, replacing the Methodist church at Chapel Yard (now Orchard Drive) on Southgate which had been used since 1827 (rebuilt in 1857).

Clowes Court, which now stands on the same site off South Lane, is named after Rev William Clowes, a Methodist preacher who came to Hessle in 1819 to help establish the movement.

It was another packed out room last night as we heard about the gruesome details of grave robbing in our region. Thanks to everyone who came along, we hope you enjoyed it!

If you missed it, our meetings are every third Thursday of the month at 7:15pm in Hessle Town Hall.

You can still get copies of our Hessle 1900-1930 book in Hessle Bookshop or at our future meetings, but all copies we brought along last night sold, so they’re selling fast!
