Blindcare

Blindcare Blindcare (Charity No: 1020073) was established to promote the relief of people who are blind or partially sighted (also referred to as visually impaired).

The charity supports the principle of intervention at an early stage in life making a massive positive impact on the future life chances, opportunities and outcomes for people who are visually impaired or blind. It supports specialist educational work that focuses on this, in particular, via its main delivery partner, The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC). RNC is the UK's leading further

education (FE) college for those aged 16 to 25 with a visual impairment, supporting up to 100 students a year, in a residential setting on its campus in Herefordshire. Many of RNC's students go on to university or other further education, some transition into work or take up volunteer roles in their own communities.

*Recent changes*

In 2021, Blindcare's trustees undertook a consultation with its donors (mainly payroll givers) on changes to its Articles, receiving no objections. Blindcare was originally a consortium of VI charities but, in 2019, all of the other charities, except RNC, withdrew by agreement, prompting the consultation. The Charity Commission has accepted the trustees' proposed changes, in supporting the life changing education and training of visually impaired young people aged 16 to 25 from across the UK, in particular that provided by RNC. The articles of association have been amended to reflect this change and to generally update the governance of the charity. Huge weekend ahead for Owen and Gareth! While most of us are planning a relaxing weekend, these two are gearing up for a massive challenge. They are taking on the Hereford Sprint Triathlon on Sunday 7 June!

It’s all for an incredible cause supporting RNC. Every single pound donated helps provide greater opportunities for our students, funding activities, equipment, and experiences that make College life richer, more accessible, and more ambitious.

Let's show Owen and Gareth some major support! Please donate if you can, cheer them on in the comments, and share this post!

Can A Level Biology work for blind and vision‑impaired students? Absolutely.

A Cambridge OCR blog written by Andri Achilleos following a recent visit to the College, shows how a traditionally visual subject can be made genuinely accessible, and how closely this work aligns with the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI).

Through tactile diagrams, 3D models and well‑embedded assistive technology, students are able to take part fully in practical science, without lowering expectations. Just as importantly, they’re building the skills and confidence needed to access learning more independently.

Congratulations to RNC's Teacher in Charge of Biology, Annie Cook, and her students, who helped inform this piece. It’s wonderful to see the College's expertise, experience, and commitment to inclusive practice reflected so clearly.

It’s a great reminder that inclusive curriculum design isn’t about simplifying or narrowing choices but about thoughtful adaptation and giving students fair access to meaningful qualifications.

Earlier this week, the spotlight shone on the people who keep everything running smoothly at the College - our volunteers.

Liz Quick, RNC’s Volunteer Manager, said:

'We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of 62 volunteers who together contributed over 4,500 hours last year. The number of hours you have given to RNC in the last 12 months is incredible, but it’s not about numbers here – it’s the impact you make on students, and that can’t be measured.'

To show just how much that support means, our students took centre stage and delivered a fantastic evening of music. Their rich and varied programme featured singing, harp, flute, and piano performances, spanning an array of styles – from classical pieces to folk tunes, and from pop songs to Turkish folk music. Student Nikhil gave a particularly lively performance of Sweet Caroline on piano, complete with enthusiastic audience participation.

Our students were determined to give something back to the people who give them so much. Beyond practical help, our volunteers offer a warm and welcoming community of all ages for students to interact with, learn from, and feel supported by.

As an extra thank you, each volunteer also received a handcrafted book hedgehog made by students during their Learning and Leisure sessions.

The evening ended with students, staff, and volunteers mingling over canapés – a lovely chance to catch up, celebrate the volunteers’ contributions, and simply say thank you.

What does a Picasso feel like? How does Van Gogh sound? For his EPQ project, RNC student Davide created an immersive exhibition that reimagined art for the senses.

By using 3D printing, swell paper, and curated soundtracks, Davide invited visitors to experience famous works like 'Starry Night' and 'Guernica' through touch and sound. Read more about Davide’s 'Art Beyond Sight' exhibition here: https://www.rnc.ac.uk/news-item.aspx?id=317

We're more than half way through work experience week and it's great to see three of our students - Oli, Ne-Yo, and Lewis - gaining hands-on industry experience with CJP Broadcast.

They've been talking about their passions for music, instrument adaptations to support visually impaired musicians, production software and career aspirations in sound, specifically around live events.

On Wednesday they raised the roof... with Oli on electric guitar, Lewis on bass and Ne-Yo on vocals to record a music video on green screen!

A powerful reminder that visual impairment is no barrier to a career in media and sound. Thanks to Kieran, Rob and Louis from CJP for all of their support.

We believe that real-world experience is the final piece of the puzzle for our students. But we can’t do it alone, we need more partners.

If you can offer a short-term placement or a regular work experience slot, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll provide all the tools and advice needed to make the experience seamless.

Please email [email protected] to get involved.
