After-school restraint collapse isn’t a child 'acting out'.

It’s the moment their nervous system finally exhales after holding everything in all day long.
And when you understand the timeline of a meltdown, the behaviours suddenly make so much more sense — and so does your response.

SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY

Proprioception is one of the most important senses you’ve probably never been taught about.
It’s the 'body awareness' system that helps a child know where their body is in space, how much force to use, and how to move smoothly and safely.

When it’s not working smoothly, children can look clumsy, crash into things, press too hard, avoid certain movements, or constantly seek deep pressure (tight hugs, squeezing, heavy work).

This isn’t laziness or attention-seeking.
It’s their nervous system asking for information.

Save this post for the next time a child is climbing, crashing, leaning, or “too rough” — it might be proprioception doing its best to cope.

SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY

If your child seems to have “no off switch” with food… or forgets to eat altogether… this might not be about behaviour.

It might be about interoception — the body’s ability to recognise hunger, fullness, and thirst.

Some children aren’t ignoring their body’s signals.
They’re struggling to feel them.

This can look like binge eating, constant snacking, or even sneaking food.
But underneath, it’s often confusion, urgency, and a nervous system trying to make sense of mixed signals.

And when shame enters the picture…
Children don’t learn — they hide.

This visual gently explains what’s really going on, and how we can support without blame.

SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY

Some children need to push, pull, crash, or squeeze to feel calm in their body.

If your child plays a bit rough, presses too hard when writing, or loves tight hugs and heavy work, it may not be misbehaviour. It may be proprioceptive processing at work.

Proprioception is how the brain understands where the body is and how much force to use. For some children, their body needs extra feedback to feel organised and steady.

When we understand this, we shift from “stop being rough” to “your body needs input.”

This post is part of our 8 senses series, helping parents see behaviour through a brain-based lens.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone — and the right kind of movement and pressure can be a powerful support for regulation.
