Two local citizen scientists have recorded one of the UK’s rarest beetles in Gloucestershire 🪲

Gordon Kirk first discovered a great silver water beetle during routine moth monitoring in West Gloucestershire, marking the species’ first ever confirmed record in the county. During a similar routine moth monitoring in Beachley, Bill Watkins also discovered a great silver water beetle caught in his moth trap.

Despite its name, the great silver water beetle looks black. However, when in water, it holds a film of air against its belly which lends it a silvery sheen.

Records like this are vital to understanding how species are shifting and responding to environmental change, and submitting your wildlife records to help build a clearer picture of the county’s biodiversity. Submit your records by heading to the link in the comments👇

Yesterday's budget reduces protection for brownfield biodiversity, allowing brownfield development under 1.5 ha to bypass BNG.

At a time when the UK is failing to meet many of its nature recovery targets and world leaders are gathering at COP17 to discuss tackling the biodiversity crisis.

Here's the thing about brownfield sites that you may not know - they are surprisingly good for nature and often home to rare beetles, wildflowers, and more. Another day, another devastating blow to nature's recovery in the UK.

Have you ever heard the cry of a curlew ring across the landscape?

Together, we can give curlews, avocets, eels and countless other species a wetland home in the Severn Hams once again. Mission Wild will protect and improve vital habitats, helping vulnerable species like curlew thrive once more in the county.

Have you ever seen an avocet?

A scarce wader, the avocet is about the same size as an oystercatcher, but much more slender. It feeds on aquatic insects and worms which it finds by sweeping its bill from side-to-side in shallow water.

Avocet and other waders rely on wetland habitats like those in the Severn Hams, which is a designated Nature Recovery Zone offering one of the county's greatest opportunities to help wildlife recover at scale, and one of the key pillars within Mission Wild.

Mayor Adrian Graham (pictured in our Mission Wild frame) enjoyed the beautiful sights and sounds of autumn at Robinswood Hill with Gloucestershire Gateway Trust last week. He shared why Nature Matters to him:

"Robinswood Hill is one of Gloucester's real treasures. I love getting outdoors, exploring the wildlife up the hill, and just taking in everything nature has to offer. Sometimes we get so caught up in everyday life that we forget what's right on our doorstep. Having somewhere like Robinswood Hill where people can walk, explore, clear their heads and connect with nature is something we should really appreciate and protect."

Do you agree? Send a postcard to your MP to let them know why to you - find out more through the link in the comments.
