Listening Post is a professional voluntary counselling service, Christian in foundation, that was formed in 1991 years ago to relieve emotional and psychological distress in Christians and non-Christians alike. We are an organisational me

mber of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and work within their Ethical Framework. We provide counselling for anyone over 18, regardless of financial status, gender, religion, sexual orientation, race, colour or ethnic origin. We serve any resident of Gloucestershire, including those who might otherwise be financially prevented from accessing professional counselling support. Private counselling can cost up to £50 an hour – a cost that many people desperately in need cannot afford. Unlike private practitioners we do not charge a set fee for our services. All we ask is that, based upon individual means, our clients make a donation per session. If, as a client, you draw support from Christianity or any faith and want that to play a part in your counselling we work within the context of your faith. If you wish to work without reference to any religious beliefs, you are equally welcome. A Listening Post’s counsellor’s professional concern will be to gain an understanding of how you see yourself and of what distresses you, and then work with you to determine how you can best be supported. We have three counselling centres in Gloucestershire, located in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud. You are welcome to contact any of our centres about counselling; other enquiries are best made to our main office in Gloucester.

On 12th June 1991, Listening Post became a registered charity, offering affordable counselling services to adults in Gloucestershire and delivering high-quality training in counselling skills. Thirty-five years later, much has changed, but our core mission hasn't 💚

To date, we've delivered over 115,000 counselling sessions, benefitting over 11,000 people...and we're still counting.

Today, we continue form an integral part of Gloucestershire's mental health infrastructure. Our professional counselling team is over 100 people strong. We continue to provide counselling free at the point of delivery for anyone over the age of 18 in Gloucestershire. And that's counselling for up to nine months, or longer if required. Long enough to make progress that goes beyond the surface. Progress that lasts.

Because the need for affordable counselling services in our county remains higher than ever, in the wake of the last decade's polycrisis and widening gaps and cuts in public services.

Thank you, to each and every one of our supporters, volunteers, staff and friends who have been part of our journey so far. We couldn't have done it without you. May we continue to be there for our community for many more years to come 💛

Mind's 2025 Big Mental Health Report revealed some startling insights that suggest the nation's crisis of mental health isn't showing any signs of decline:
💚 1 in 5 adults in England is living with a common mental health problem and rates are steadily rising
💚 Cuts to public services is noted as a key driver of declining mental health rates
💚 The cost of mental ill health in England is now estimated at £300 billion a year
💚 33% of those accessing GP support reported that it didn’t meet their needs – up from 27% in 2019
💚 Over 1 in 3 reported a deterioration in their mental health while waiting for an appointment with their GP or a voluntary organisation

This pattern is mirrored in our communities. 2025-26 was a record-breaking year in numbers of local people who accessed our counselling services.

643 people were seen by us last year - for an assessment and to start counselling. That's almost two new people per day, without counting the additional enquiries and calls that didn't translate into further support. 643 people, each with their own story, their own experiences, hopes and fears.

Listening Post does not receive any funding from the public sector to run our community counselling service, accessible to any adult living in Gloucestershire. We're reliant on donations from people like you to continue supporting local people in their journey towards better mental health amid a national crisis.

You can be the reason someone receives the support they need today, by making a donation towards our service: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/6878 #!/DonationDetails

Thank you 💚

Listening Post IS its volunteers.

Our 110 incredible volunteer counsellors delivered a whopping 4603 hours of counselling support last year through 5523 counselling sessions. Considering private counselling often costs upwards of £50 per 50-minute session, that's a financial value of £276,150 given in-kind to our community.

But the real value of their contribution isn't just the money. It's the changed lives, the hope restored, the light reignited in people's hearts.

"For the first time I felt listened to without judgement and knew I was supported to explore the past events that led me to counselling. I feel like I have been given a freedom and space to breathe."

And then there's all of the additional time given by our trustees, voluntary admin assistants and friends of the charity. Much of what they do goes unseen, but we know. We couldn't operate without them.

To each and every one of our volunteers, from the longest serving to the newest. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you. You are our greatest asset 💚 💛

Today we said our goodbyes to our dear friend and trustee, Tony Solomon.

Tony brought infectious joy, humility, wisdom and enthusiasm to our work at Listening Post and he encouraged so many.

We are truly privileged to have known and loved him, and been one of the many local charities he gave so much of himself to over the years.

Rest well, dear Tony. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tony’s nearest and dearest at this time 💛

Please take extra care in this hot weather if you are taking prescribed anti-depressant medication❗☀ ❗

If you're taking common types of anti-depressant medication, you might be more vulnerable to the health risks associated with high temperatures.

Taking prescription medication alongside talking therapy is a very common approach to tackling a variety of mental health challenges, and so we know that this applies to many of our clients and friends.

Tricyclic anti-depressants such as amitriptyline, and SSRIs such as fluoxetine and citalopram, can affect the body's temperature regulation and make you more sensitive to heat. The same is true for antipsychotic medications and other drugs treating physical health conditions.

With high temperatures in the UK set to continue, reaching highs of 33 degrees Celcius in some parts of the country this week, please take care, especially if you're taking one of these medications. It's important to check the potential side effects of your medication, follow public guidance on staying cool and hydrated, and always seek professional medical advice if you are concerned about yourself or somebody else.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and we love this year's theme set by the Mental Health Foundation: Take action 👊

Awareness alone isn't enough if we are to create mentally healthier communities. So, what action can you take today for your or someone else's mental health? Here are 7 ideas! 💚

1. Do one thing for you that makes you feel good. Whether it's a walk in the park, savouring a cup of coffee, taking time to finish a novel or craft project, or going for a run. Prioritise your wellbeing through one action today. 🍵

2. Encourage someone with a genuine compliment. It could be a stranger, or someone you know. Even if it's just to say that you love their backpack; you could make their day. 💬

3. Start a honest conversation with a loved one about mental health. Change starts with honesty and openness. 👐

4. Share your own story. If you've experienced challenges with your mental health - whether big or small - we encourage you to speak out and share your story. However big or small your problems may seem, sharing our stories connects us with others and dismantles mental health stigma. It doesn't have to be broadcasted on social media if that makes you uncomfortable - even just speaking about it with one new person makes a difference. 🗣️

5. Practice gratitude. Take a moment to think of three things you are thankful for today. Thankfulness can help us to reframe and refocus when things feel overwhelming. 🙏

6. Explore seeking help for your - or a loved one's - mental health. Counselling is an evidence-based healing pathway for a huge range of mental health challenges. At Listening Post, our 100+ volunteers represent a variety of skillsets and levels of experience. We always seek to match people with the right counsellor for them. 🤲

7. Spread the word. Have you or someone you know had a positive experience with counselling at Listening Post? If so, please spread the word about what our charity offers, so that more people in Gloucestershire can access the support they need to thrive! 💛
