🌊 Drowning Prevention Week

As temperatures rise again this week, time in the water becomes more appealing - but we must remain aware of water-related risks including, ultimately, the risk of drowning.

Buckinghamshire Search and Rescue hosted their Patron HM Lord-Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire, The Countess Howe, at a water-based search exercise this week.

The exercise demonstrated the dangers, as well as BSAR's capabilities across land, air and water to assist when called out to search for a missing person. With the additional risks around water the teams have to be disciplined and work together to not just search, but look after their team members as well.

Stay safe around water, it is more powerful than you imagine.

🌟 BSAR wouldn’t be what it is, or in the position it is in without it’s volunteers🌟

This Volunteers Week we have tried to highlight the commitment our members give to the organisation, not just with all the hours providing Search & Rescue but in the additional roles and services they carry out. An organisation like BSAR requires a structure that allows it to operate effectively and efficiently. That structure is managed by all our volunteers. Whilst we acknowledge the time and effort they give we also thank the families for the support to be able to respond when needed most. The volunteers highlighted this week are just the tip

🌟 Meet Alex🌟

Alex is a crucial member of our Trustee Board, he provides invaluable experience, knowledge and oversight to our team. His dedication towards his non operational role demonstrates pure passion for BSAR.

A few words from Alex, “ I joined BSAR to support not just the community but also the BSAR team, which I do through a none-operational role as a trustee. For me it’s important we make sure that BSAR looks after the incredibly dedicated and skilled volunteers that help others. What the team does doesn’t happen by accident, and as a charity, it’s not just all the operational elements, there’s also the charity side - from income generation, longer term planning, and all the paperwork that comes with it. Without both parts we wouldn’t be able to help those we do.

If you are thinking you can’t commit operationally for whatever reason, but that you could support in a none-operational way, please do get in touch.”

🌟 Meet Stuart 🌟

Stuart joined in 2025 and has since taken on the role of a Trustee in addition to his operational role of a Licensed Search Technician; his previous experiences and skills have all come together within BSAR and we value that so much. Stuart has already attended a whole host of callouts and has served to bring closure to families in county and out.

A few words from Stuart, “Since joining BSAR last year, I’ve been consistently impressed by the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved. The team brings an extraordinary depth of skill and commitment to genuinely challenging, high stakes work. On live searches it is comforting to know that you are surrounded by expertise that you can draw on as a team to get the best results. I’m proud to contribute both as a licensed search technician and as a Trustee.”

🌟 Meet Austin 🌟

Austin is joint Events Lead with Ruth; they provide pivotal support in organising our PR and even support. Austin is also part of our Welfare Team and operationally is a Licensed Search Technician, Team Leader and part of the Drone unit, further supporting with being a Casualty Carer. All on top of a full time job and other volunteering responsibilities, what a guy!

A few words from Austin, “I joined BSAR in 2019, along with my wife Ruth as I wanted to help the community in a practical way and Search & Rescue seemed an ideal platform.
The initial training was well organised and the Team were friendly & welcoming, ensuring everyone, irrespective of previous experience, was supported. Very quickly BSAR became a 'second family', supporting each other, both during training and after qualifying as a Licensed Search Technician, learning a wide range of new skills, some totally alien to us at the time, but which are now second-nature! Many of these skills are beneficial in my daily life and employment, while others are specific to a particular role within the team.
Everyone in the Team has a variety of skills & knowledge from their diverse backgrounds - It is this variety that makes the Team work as a whole. It has been a pleasure to work alongside my colleagues, and I am proud to be a part of BSAR and contribute to the community.”

🌟 Meet Ben (the 3rd)🌟

Finding the words to do Ben justice is hard. Since the day of joining Ben has been making an impact in every area and in every role they have held. Ben exemplifies what good looks like when you need a volunteer. An experienced Search Technician and Team Leader, Search Ops, Planner and Manager, oh and a Despatcher. A Trainer, our Volunteer Management Officer, an ex. trustee I’ll stop there. Many of us are in awe of the work rate Ben gives and we are all fortunate to have him on our side. Ben is one of those people who has helped shape BSAR, and for that we are thankful.

A few words from Ben, “I joined BSAR because I wanted to make a difference and support those who need it most. Some years on and being part of BSAR is much more than that. It is about making a difference with a team of inspiring colleagues who all share the same passion and commitment. I have made some life long friends, some of which genuinely feel like my extended family. Every deployment I learn so much, I take so much value from working as a team and being around some incredible people. I also get to train and deploy with my best friend which is truly amazing. The moment the phone goes the dynamics change, our focus is turned solely onto maximising the opportunity to locate the missing person; motivating and supporting each other every step of the way. I genuinely thank each and every one of my colleagues within SAR and beyond.
