Regina Margherita a Bordighera – Gisella Merello – book review

Bordighera, a beautiful town on the Italian Riviera between the French border at Menton and the bustling port of Genoa, has a rich culture and moments of grandeur. One such moment was the adoption of the town by the most scintillating member of the Italian royal family, Margherita of Savoy (1851–1926), Queen of Italy by marriage to her first cousin King Umberto I of Italy. She was the daughter of Prince Ferdinando of Savoy, Duke of Genoa, and Princess Elisabeth of Saxony, and the mother of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. Although she had been visiting Bordighera from Rome since her late twenties, it was the assassination of her husband, King Umberto I in 1900, which influenced the Queen to decide to live there permanently, purchase a sublime villa and build a second one next door.

As Sabine Noelle-Wying writes in Riviera Buzz (https://riviera-buzz.com/margherita-of-savoy-bordighera/), Queen Margherita “withdrew to the Ligurian Riviera to finally find peace again. Some places merely serve as a backdrop – and then there are those rare places that become a refuge. For Margherita of Savoy, Bordighera became precisely such a sanctuary: a place of longing shaped by light, sea air, and quiet elegance. Shaken by the weight of history and searching for a new sense of balance, she discovered in Bordighera something that went far beyond mere retreat. The town became an emotional anchor.”

This captivating period in the history of the Italian royal family and of Bordighera forms the basis for a new book, entitled Regina Margherita a Bordighera – Soggiorni, incontri e memorie nel Ponente ligure (Queen Margherita in Bordighera – Sojourns, Encounters and Memories on the Western Italian Riviera) by accomplished author Gisella Merello. The book is in Italian for the most part but those of us not fluent in Italian are grateful for the excellent English summaries and image captions.

Gisella’s research is always first class and the book is terrific… both authoritative and charming in the mass of anecdotal details. I expected a well-researched and brightly-written book from my friend and colleague Gisella and that is what I find. She manages to record a lot of splendid detail but at the same time maintaining a flow of the image, majesty and importance of Queen Margherita to Bordighera and to the wider Italian nation. I was aware of the Queen of course, from being in and around Bordighera for so long, but this book helps bring her to life for me. I congratulate Gisella sincerely for a job well done. I find myself telling those interested that Gisella, besides the gift for research and writing, has the additional quality of dedication and concentration. I know when she is engaged in an importance oeuvre because she is able successfully to shut out anything that disturbs her from the task. In this way she puts the best foot forward, undertakes the task and then finishes it. This is the way by which she has been able to write so many important papers and books each in a short space of time. Her legacy is assured.

Graham Avery – 1943-2026 RIP

I am sad to tell you that Graham Avery has died.

Among his various achievements and posts, Graham Avery CMG FLS was a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London; Honorary Director-General of the European Commission, Brussels; Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute, Florence; Honorary Director-General of the European Commission, Brussels; a Senior Member of St. Antony’s College, Oxford University; Secretary General of the Trans European Policy Studies Association; Fellow at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University; Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, Florence; and author of many learned papers. Graham Avery was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 2012 New Year Honours for his services to European affairs, recognition during his distinguished career as the Director of the European Commission in Brussels and his extensive work focusing on European enlargement and international relations.

Graham’s interest in Clarence arose from his interest in botany, in particular the flowers and plants of the Alps. His research into Reginald Farrer (1880 –1920), traveller and plant collector brought him in 2012 to Clarence’s Casa Fontanalba Visitors’ Book, which I had published online in 2005, and the realisation that Farrer and Bicknell had met there. Since then he has been a life-member and Vice-Chairman of the Clarence Bicknell Association and fundamental to our efforts in researching and promulgating Clarence’s various endeavours. He has been so great for the Clarence efforts, especially his research for Valerie Lester’s 2018 biography MARVELS, the Life of Clarence Bicknell. For decades, as an enlightened amateur botanist, he walked the Alps, including those which Clarence knew. He has developed a knowledge of some of the other parts of the Alps where Clarence studied the flora and has provided original research from other parts of Italy, France and the UK, much of which is published in his own name, for example on our web site’s documents page.

He has lived in Brussels and Florence while maintaining his home base in Oxford where he passed away. We were privileged to have him as a friend and as a supporter of Clarence Bicknell’s legacy. I will sorely miss him, his contributions and his encouragements.

Congratulations to Clarence friend Valentina Pulinetti on winning such an important Italian photography award, Obiettivo Terra 2026.

"I am honored by the award given to me by the UniVerde Foundation," comments Pulinetti, who was a student of Alfredo Moreschi, a historic photographer who captured the essence of Sanremo and was a custodian of the nature of the mountainous coast. “Obiettivo Terra” is one of the most important Italian contests promoted by the UniVerde Foundation and the Italian Geographical Society, aimed at celebrating and rewarding the defense and enhancement of biodiversity and the protected beauty of Italy's parks."I'm in love with nature. With my camera, I love capturing the essence of flora, the secrets of the animal world, and the beauty of the hinterland. Valentina Pulinetti, 32, a real estate agent from Sanremo with a passion for photography, has received an important national award. She won a Special Mention in the "Villages" category (in collaboration with the association I Borghi più belli d'Italia) in the prestigious 17th edition of the national photography competition "Obiettivo Terra 2026." The winning shot is titled "The village of Triora among the snow-capped peaks." The image immortalizes the famous town in western Liguria immersed in the natural scenery of the Ligurian Alps Regional Natural Park, in the province of Imperia. She received the award in Imperia from Alessandro Alessandri, president of the Ligurian Alps Park. Rocco Corsetti, director of the association "The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy," introduces Valentina Pulinetti's shot: "The photo of Triora, winner of the 'Borghi' Mention, captures with extraordinary effectiveness the dialogue between the historic town and the mountain landscape, highlighting the contrast between the stone architecture of the village and the luminous grandeur of the snow-capped peaks in the background. The broad, orderly perspective creates a striking vision, in which the urban fabric integrates harmoniously with the natural morphology, in a visual synthesis of great impact."

I've been working on Clarence, his collection, his web site, on research papers about him, the book and the film, since 1988 on and off, since 2013 seriously. The satisfaction gets bigger with time as a) more researchers find our page of academic papers https://clarencebicknell.com/documents/ or by finding the name of someone they are studying in the Casa Fontanalba Visitors' Book (https://clarencebicknell.com/wp-content/uploads/casa_fontanalba_visitors_books.xls) and b) someone discovers Clarence and orders a book or sends an email.

I received a simple but meaningful email from a new fan of his in Switzerland today...

Dear Mr. Bicknell,

Thank you very much for your kind message. The book and the postcards arrived safely today, and I was very pleased about your thoughtful gift. We spend time in Liguria every year and especially enjoy visiting the gardens there. Our next visit will be to Bordighera, and that is actually how I first came across Clarence Bicknell and became interested in his life and work.

Thank you again for your kindness and for sending the book.
With best wishes.

It really does make the effort worthwhile. I live in hope that the BBC or ARTE will phone and say they want to do a 6-part documentary on Clarence, but in the meantime these gestures suffice. Thank you.
