Its main statutory duty is to act as a consultee in the planning and licensing process but it also discusses many other local issues such as roads, footpaths, litter, dog fouling, playgrounds, street lighting, etc. The first fifteen minutes of the meeting are made available to members of the public who wish to address the council on any local matters. If there is more than one speaker from the publ

ic, each is limited to a maximum of five minutes to the first three, allocated on a first come, first served basis. You can apply to address the council by sending an e-mail to The Chairman

MERCAT CROSS

As previously posted, Highland Council plans work to improve the layout of Fortrose High Street, with better pedestrian access, in September/October this year.

As part of the work, the Council plans to excavate the Mercat Cross site at the junction of Academy Street. There is a long-standing rumour that parts of the cross might be buried under the pavement! The damaged cross, including any found parts, will be examined and repaired by Historic Environment Scotland.

We asked your opinion on alternative sites for the location of the repaired cross. This is still under discussion but... it now seems likely that the cross will return to the existing location because of its โ€œListedโ€ status.

FRCC will continue to work with Highland Council and Historic Environment Scotland to ensure that this local historic item is restored and returned.

Fortrose High Street improvements

We're delighted to report that work to improve the layout and quality of Fortrose High Street pavements is planned by Highland Council for autumn this year.

The plan is to remove the old drop kerbs that make the footway difficult to navigate due to their sloping surface. These kerbs will be replaced with upstanding kerbs so that the surface of the footway can be made level to improve access for walkers, wheelchair users, prams, etc.

New uncontrolled crossing points will be established with new drop kerbs, tactile paving and improved sight lines for road crossing. The pavement will also be widened at the corner with Church Street.

As part of the works, the Mercat Cross site will be excavated under the supervision of Environment Officers and any materials associated with the structure removed for safe keeping and the path reinstated with new tarmac.

Local resident Rosie Fea and Community Councillor Jo-Anne Pugh collected FOUR very large bags of rubbish from the Fairy Glen road verge today.

Lots of it would have been recyclable (cans, plastic bottles) and some has clearly come a bit of a distance (McDonalds packaging).

No-one wants to have to pick up after other folk. It's unpleasant and potentially hazardous.

SO PLEASE ... PUT YOUR RUBBISH IN A BIN!
And, if the bins are full, PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME!

Rant over.
Thank you very much :-)

For folk who were concerned about the containers now located in the grounds of the former church in Fortrose, these are temporary. The Conservation team at Highland Council have confirmed that they are permitted during the works on the building. They will need to be removed and the ground reinstated at the end of the works.
