โ€˜Close Encounter!โ€™ by Deborah Heath
Taken in September 2021, this lovely image captures a memorable close-up moment with a curious roe kid.

Photographed using a Nikon Z9 with a Nikkor 500mm lens (F5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO 3600), Deborah was halfway down a bank when the young deer unexpectedly approached. Staying completely still to avoid startling her, Deborah watched as the roe kid came so close she could barely fit her into the viewfinder.

The result is a beautifully intimate image, full of character, with those bright eyes and shiny wet nose stealing the scene.

๐ŸฆŒ How could AI change the way we monitor deer?
From camera traps that automatically sort thousands of images to drones capable of surveying landscapes in a single flight, artificial intelligence and machine learning are starting to reshape how we understand and monitor deer populations.

But how much of this is truly practical today and where are the limits?

In this article, we take a balanced look at where these tools are already helping to improve efficiency and data collection in deer management and where careful interpretation and human expertise remain essential.

๐ŸฆŒ Deer Diary โ€“ Mid June is now live
Weโ€™re now in a key post-birth period for UK deer, where lactation demands are shaping behaviour, feeding patterns and habitat use across species. Deer activity is often subtle but highly focused around cover and reliable forage.

Our latest update explores what to look for on the ground, how disturbance is influencing behaviour, and what these patterns mean for monitoring and management.
