🦌 Deer Trivia: Mouse Deer
Despite their name, mouse deer aren't actually deer.

Also known as chevrotains, they are the world's smallest hoofed mammals. The tiny Java mouse-deer stands just 30cm at the shoulder, while most species live in the forests of South and Southeast Asia.

🦌 Would you feed a wild deer for the perfect photo?

In this month's Deer Matters, Charles Smith-Jones examines the increasing trend of people feeding and interacting with wild deer, often in pursuit of close-up photographs and social media moments. While these encounters may appear harmless, they can have serious consequences for deer welfare and public safety.

A red stag in Richmond Park had stopped grazing with the herd and learned to demand food from picnickers. Last month it was destroyed after injuring a man.

Charles Smith-Jones of the British Deer Society sets that death beside the Torridon stag Callum, fed croissants until his teeth rotted, and asks why so many treat wild deer as pets. Have you watched a park herd change as the visitors have?
