🏛️ DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT FILEY MUSEUM? 🐚

Filey Museum has perhaps one of the most unusual rent agreements in Yorkshire… its annual fee is just ONE “Devil’s toenail”! 😈🦶

And no, it’s not quite as sinister as it sounds!

The “Devil’s toenail” is a Gryphaea fossil — an extinct relative of the modern oyster whose distinctive curved shell gives it its unusual nickname. 🐚

Every year, the museum pays Filey Town Council its symbolic rent of one of these fossils. The fossil is then traditionally handed back to the museum!

The building itself is pretty special too. Dating from 1696, it was originally two single-storey thatched cottages and is believed to be the oldest surviving domestic building in Filey. 🏠

Today its rooms tell different parts of Filey’s story, including fishing and lifeboat history, traditional gansey knitting, Victorian life, old photographs and local seaside history. There's even a Bait House in the garden showing how mussels were prepared and fishing lines baited. ⚓🧶

A brilliant little piece of Filey history — and surely one of the strangest rent payments around! 😈🐚

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming a special visitor to the museum, Kevin Hollinrake MP. Our trustees shared the museum’s journey so far, along with our vision and ambitions for the future. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our progress and look ahead to what’s next.
