Making our green spaces more accessible, welcoming for wildlife & people, fostering connection and diversity while boosting community wellbeing & resilience. A group of like minded residents has got together to work with the local community to improve the amazing green space we have on our doorstep. Trees, wild flowers, litter picking, Nordic Walking, Freemoovement, football, play, bowling, celebrations - all being talked about.

You may have noticed that the small community orchard in Cowick Barton Fields has been thriving in recent years 🌳🍎

That’s all thanks to the dedication and care of Cowick Roots & Recreation and our amazing resident volunteers, who have been pruning and maintaining the trees season after season.

We’re now ready to grow the orchard again.

We have a few spaces identified to plant additional trees, filling gaps and helping the orchard continue to flourish — providing more blossom, more fruit, and more habitat for wildlife.

You can sponsor a heritage fruit tree for £50.
This includes the tree, stakes and ties, and mulch around the base.

It’s a chance to contribute something lasting to your community — supporting the wellbeing of wildlife, local people and future generations.

You’re very welcome to plant the tree yourself (we can arrange a suitable time), or we can plant it on your behalf.

If you’d like to sponsor a tree, please contact us directly:

Or join our WhatsApp community group (details and link are on our page).

Please don’t DM us on Facebook.

Let’s grow! 🌿

Lots of wild food to be found in St Thomas. These food foraging & cooking walks run by our friends at Love Food are great, especially if youre inexperienced, plus it's supporting one of the wonderful initiatives that ate a lifeline to our local community.

Book now for our next Urban Foraging Walk in St Thomas this Wednesday 11 June 11am-2pm with . https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/love-food-cic-urban-foraging-walk-june-2025-tickets-1399242354549?aff=oddtdtcreator. In all honesty we might have to stop running these walks soon, as they are not grant funded at the moment, and we are struggling to get enough bookings, even though the last two years we run them they have always been fully booked. I am not sure if this is because they are now Pay What You Can instead of completely free, but they are still free or low cost for anyone who can't afford to pay more. We may run some in the evening or at weekends for anyone who can't make daytime walks, so let us know if you would book for those instead.

Those living West of the River Exe (ie St Thomas, Exwick & Alphington) will soon have a gorgeous print magazine, delivered to your home, with stories and event announcements tailored especially for living this side of the river! The magazine will be owned and produced by the community... not for profit. To find out more about what that means, and how you can get involved in this wonderful project, please come along to this meeting.

The more people that attend and get involved from our neighbourhood, the more our voices will be amplified, the more relevant the magazine will become for people in this area, the unique issues we face living here, and the more our wonderful community will be celebrated, so we do hope to see some familiar faces!

A little bird tells me that there will be space devoted to parks and green spaces in each issue, and will cover events and projects run by community initiatives and groups, including Cowick Roots and Recreation. Yay!

Junior Parkrun every Sunday morning in Cowick Barton Playing Fields - what a great start to Sunday morning 🌅

DON'T FORGET!

Cowick Barton Playing Fields is now home to an exciting new junior parkrun event! Launched last week, the weekly 2km timed run is open to all children aged 4-14.

Held every Sunday at 9am, starting just inside the Barton Road entrance (EX2 9DD), this free community event is a great way for local kids to get active and have fun. Unlike a race, the focus is on participation and personal achievement rather than competition.

To participate, parents and guardians need to first register their child online at parkrun.org.uk/register/

Runners should arrive by 8:45am for the 9:00am start.

Those interested in volunteering can visit parkrun.org.uk/cowickbartonpf-juniors/volunteer/ to sign up.

Alternatively, you can email the event team at [email protected] with any questions.
