WHY MAYA’S LAW MATTERS BEYOND MAYA

Over the past two weeks, we have shared Maya’s story and the journey of Maya’s Law.

But today, we want to talk about something bigger.

Because Maya was not the first child to lose their life following safeguarding failures.

And sadly, she has not been the last.

Every year, serious case reviews, safeguarding practice reviews and child protection reports identify similar themes:

Concerns raised.

Warning signs missed.

Information not shared.

Opportunities lost.

Families left asking the same heartbreaking question:

Could more have been done?

This is why Maya’s Law matters beyond Maya.

Not because every case is the same.

But because the lessons are often painfully familiar.

Throughout this week we will explore some of those lessons, what reports continue to tell us, and why stronger protections for children remain so important.

Because children deserve more than lessons learned after tragedy.

They deserve action before it happens.

For Maya.

For every child.

PCC Joy Allen is proud to support , a new national campaign launching during Child Safety Week to help keep children safer on our roads.

The campaign encourages parents and carers to keep children rear‑facing in car seats until at least four years old - and longer where possible. Evidence shows children are up to five times safer when travelling rear‑facing compared to forward‑facing.

Rear Face for Safety brings together road safety professionals, policing, child injury prevention specialists, public health experts and academics, alongside Swedish road safety experts whose approach has helped make Sweden one of the safest countries in the world for children on the road.

💙 Supporting Families Through Their Darkest Days 💙

No parent should ever have to experience the loss of a child.

Sadly, every day across the UK, families face the heartbreak of miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, and the death of a child. During these unimaginable moments, organisations like 4Louis provide vital support, helping families create precious memories and access the support they need.

A team from Durham Constabulary will soon be taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for this incredible charity.

4Louis provides:

🕊️ Memory boxes for bereaved families

🕊️ Cold cots that allow precious extra time together

🕊️ Bereavement training for professionals

🕊️ Support and resources for families during and after loss

At Maya’s Law, we understand only too well the devastating impact the loss of a child can have on a family. While our mission is focused on preventing child abuse and protecting children, we also recognise the importance of supporting families affected by loss and the organisations that stand beside them.

We are proud to support this fundraising effort and would encourage anyone who can to donate or share.

Every donation helps ensure families facing the unimaginable receive compassion, dignity, and support when they need it most. 💙
