With the coming of April, tree planting season has officially ended at TCV North East! 🌳🌳

For the past few months, we've planted through wind, rain, snow, hail and warm sunshine ❄️☔☀️

A massive thank you to our partners, organisations, TCV volunteers, student volunteers, university interns and work experience students who have helped create new hedges, woodlands and orchards all across the North East....everyone has worked extremely hard through difficult conditions 💪💪

TCV North East have planted -

🌱 8,769 metres of new hedgerow
🌱 44,189 trees (that's nearly 5.5 miles covered! 😯)
🌱 3,553 trees for woodland spaces

TCV North East have created -

🌳 2.78 hectares of new woodland
🌳 3.3 hectares of new wood pasture
🌳 1.16 hectares of new orchard

Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) and is recognised every year on March 3rd to celebrate wild animals and plants, and the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet 🐾🌍

The WWD2026 theme is Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods 🌱🌱

Here at TCV North East, we didn't work with any wild plants or animals today, but we did take a group of hard working volunteers from Sage to help the park rangers at Jesmond Dene in Newcastle.

Along with TCV staff and volunteers, the team finished off, then created an extra 36 metres of wood chip path along a Public Right of Way on the edge of the park. This will make a muddy and slippery section of pathway safe and much more accessible to the public, allowing them to enjoy this beautiful city centre green space 🌿🌿

TCV North East has recently had the pleasure of working with Tees Community Forest to create some hedgerow and woodland on site at Seymour Skills Academy near Hartlepool.

Staff from Seymour Civil Engineering Ltd and our MSc interns from Teesside University came along in the wind and rain to help us plant the woodland trees 🌳🌳

We also had some hardworking students from the Choices (Vocational Experiences) course at Hartlepool College of Further Education and students from East Durham College - Houghall Campus who helped us plant the hedgerow. For some students, this was the first time planting and protecting new trees and they did a great job learning some new skills! 🌱🌱
