There’s a whole world of student-led sustainability happening across Durham

Over three weeks, I tried to visit and film as many eco societies and student groups as possible, and the variety and passion behind each one was incredible. Everyone’s approaching environmentalism differently, but all pushing toward the same goal: a more sustainable Durham.

Working with on an incredible project to make land-use changes across Grey College, rethinking how space is used to better support biodiversity and sustainability.

Selling homemade earrings and second-hand clothes from .wardrobe to raise money for charity. Aidan’s is taking on fast fashion head-on by promoting reuse and keeping sustainable options affordable.

Hosting weekly heritage woodcraft sessions led by reconnecting students with traditional skills and the natural resources around them.

Linking up with external organisations, organising transport for students to volunteer with the Wildlife Trust at Rainton Meadows, making conservation work more accessible.

Restarting their allotment and planning a range of events including litter picks, campus eco projects, and even environmental pub quizzes.

Running weekly sessions to build and maintain a shared garden space behind Butler, creating a community around growing and sustainability. This society is free to join and welcome to all, not just Butler!

This is only scratching the surface!!, There’s so much more going on across the university, and so many students putting real effort into building a greener future. If you’re interested, get involved, have a look around, there’s something for everyone

A history of propping up the South African apartheid regime

Illegal Settlements
Continuing to invest in companies operating illegally in the Occupied West Bank

When you pay tuition, your money sits in Barclays. That means YOU are funding this

Durham has £19.1 million sitting in Barclays, Europe’s biggest fossil fuel investor, and it’s time to make a change.
You’re more likely to get a divorce than change your bank. That money moves in and out your whole life, and Barclays gets to decide where it goes. Right now? Straight into fossil fuels.
Switching to an ethical bank is twice as effective at cutting your carbon footprint as going vegan!
So Durham, are you ready to make them an offer they can’t refuse?
Time to dump Barclays
Follow the link in our Bio and SIGN!!

Durham University holds £19.1 million in accounts with Barclays. That money isn’t sitting idle, it’s invested within an institution identified as Europe’s largest financier of fossil fuels for 9 years running
We’re in the corner of change. York St John’s University has already made the switch to an ethical bank. And Durham can too!!
But we need to show our support for this before the 22nd April, when the University Finance Committee where they will review banking arrangements

Durham Uni holds £19.1 million with Barclays, and they don’t have to.

Barclays is Europe’s largest investor in fossil fuels industries.

If we act NOW, we can demonstrate enough student support to convince the University to switch to a more ethical bank ahead of their next financial meeting in April.

But we need your help.

Sign our petition up in the Linktree to make a difference at Durham. It only takes two clicks: 1) log in to the SU site and 2) click sign.

Durham CAN join in the list of UK unis which have already fully divested from harmful industries. All we need is signatures.

Five minutes from North Road is a woodland that almost didn’t survive

Flass Vale isn’t just “a bit of green”. It’s common land, a Local Wildlife Site, a Nature Reserve, and protected Local Green Space. But back in 1973, it was meant to be housing.

Locals said no.
There were protest picnics, families and activists standing together, even blocking bulldozers, to protect their access to this living woodland of mushrooms, birds and critters.

Because of them, Flass Vale still exists.
Bought by the council and officially designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2007.

This place is a reminder that green spaces survive because people fight for them.
Come walk it. Appreciate it. Protect it
