DURHAM! We gotta talk about the air out here!

Listen up, because we gotta get outta the car mindset. Half your daily journeys? You could walk ’em before your playlist even gets good

Here’s the wild part: air pollution doesn’t just hit your lungs. We’re talkin’ heart disease, strokes, asthma, concentration problems, the whole package. And the folks most exposed? Kids, older people, cyclists, and pedestrians right there at the roadside.

So here’s the play

Arriva’s doin’ £1.60 fares in the Uni Zone. Cheaper than a cuppa on North Road.
£2.70 gets you all the way to Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, even Hartlepool.
C’mon now, that’s a DEAL.

And NEW electric buses are rolling out on the Angel busses 21, X68, 58 and Arriva busses 48, 64 and X46. Quieter, cleaner, smoother. We livin’ in the future now.

One full bus takes dozens of cars off the road, Less traffic and less fumes

Small actions, real actions:
Cycle once a week
Car-free Fridays
Carpool with your friends
Walk it when you can

Because clean air ain’t gonna happen by magic. It happens when everybody chips in a little.

Climate Action Durham are throwing a

CLEAN AIR DAY Fair
June 18th, 4 till 6
Durham Town Hall

Here it’ll be all about impacts of air pollution, and the problem in Durham. A vision for what a Durham with cleaner air might look like. Current clean air actions, successes, and ways to get involved

Cleaner air, quieter streets, cheaper travel, healthier people. That sounds like a win to me.

Bing b**g!

There’s a whole world of student-led sustainability happening across Durham

Over three weeks, I tried to visit and film as many eco societies and student groups as possible, and the variety and passion behind each one was incredible. Everyone’s approaching environmentalism differently, but all pushing toward the same goal: a more sustainable Durham.

Working with on an incredible project to make land-use changes across Grey College, rethinking how space is used to better support biodiversity and sustainability.

Selling homemade earrings and second-hand clothes from .wardrobe to raise money for charity. Aidan’s is taking on fast fashion head-on by promoting reuse and keeping sustainable options affordable.

Hosting weekly heritage woodcraft sessions led by reconnecting students with traditional skills and the natural resources around them.

Linking up with external organisations, organising transport for students to volunteer with the Wildlife Trust at Rainton Meadows, making conservation work more accessible.

Restarting their allotment and planning a range of events including litter picks, campus eco projects, and even environmental pub quizzes.

Running weekly sessions to build and maintain a shared garden space behind Butler, creating a community around growing and sustainability. This society is free to join and welcome to all, not just Butler!

This is only scratching the surface!!, There’s so much more going on across the university, and so many students putting real effort into building a greener future. If you’re interested, get involved, have a look around, there’s something for everyone

Durham has £19.1 million sitting in Barclays, Europe’s biggest fossil fuel investor, and it’s time to make a change.
You’re more likely to get a divorce than change your bank. That money moves in and out your whole life, and Barclays gets to decide where it goes. Right now? Straight into fossil fuels.
Switching to an ethical bank is twice as effective at cutting your carbon footprint as going vegan!
So Durham, are you ready to make them an offer they can’t refuse?
Time to dump Barclays

Durham University holds £19.1 million in accounts with Barclays. That money isn’t sitting idle, it’s invested within an institution identified as Europe’s largest financier of fossil fuels for 9 years running
We’re in the corner of change. York St John’s University has already made the switch to an ethical bank. And Durham can too!!
But we need to show our support for this before the 22nd April, when the University Finance Committee where they will review banking arrangements
