There’s a whole world of student-led sustainability happening across Durham
Over three weeks, I tried to visit and film as many eco societies and student groups as possible, and the variety and passion behind each one was incredible. Everyone’s approaching environmentalism differently, but all pushing toward the same goal: a more sustainable Durham.
Working with on an incredible project to make land-use changes across Grey College, rethinking how space is used to better support biodiversity and sustainability.
Selling homemade earrings and second-hand clothes from .wardrobe to raise money for charity. Aidan’s is taking on fast fashion head-on by promoting reuse and keeping sustainable options affordable.
Hosting weekly heritage woodcraft sessions led by reconnecting students with traditional skills and the natural resources around them.
Linking up with external organisations, organising transport for students to volunteer with the Wildlife Trust at Rainton Meadows, making conservation work more accessible.
Restarting their allotment and planning a range of events including litter picks, campus eco projects, and even environmental pub quizzes.
Running weekly sessions to build and maintain a shared garden space behind Butler, creating a community around growing and sustainability. This society is free to join and welcome to all, not just Butler!
This is only scratching the surface!!, There’s so much more going on across the university, and so many students putting real effort into building a greener future. If you’re interested, get involved, have a look around, there’s something for everyone
