Food For Thought - West Dunbartonshire Charity providing emergency food aid, support and information to enable those using our services to alleviate circumstances leading to poverty

We are a charity set up to deliver emergency food aid to those in need in West Dunbartonshire and, where possible, empower our clients to find a way out of poverty by means of support, information and education as part of the social regeneration of Dumbarton High Street. Our key aim is to provide individuals and families with support and knowledge to improve life choices through peer support, comm

unity participation and education. Our Objectives Are:
Provide those in need with emergency food aid, support and information. To alleviate the circumstances leading to poverty through the use of advocacy, support and education. Establish community support opportunities for self improvement through learning and participation. Provide educational opportunities to enable our clients to improve life skills and widen life choices. To raise the awareness of the local community of West Dunbartonshire to the issues associated with poverty and encourage them to become actively involved.

****Please Everyone Take Note of and Share The Below Important Information****

We’re sharing an important update about how Food for Thought is adapting to significant funding changes from West Dunbartonshire Council. Because funds and food stock are now going to be a lot tighter, we will be prioritising families with children and pensioners only to ensure the youngest and most vulnerable in our community continue to have access to nutritious food during the months of greatest need.

This means that from Monday 15th June all households without children residing with them who are in need of emergency food aid will be advised via signposting to contact other Local Authority Services such as other local food banks, local pantries and West Dunbartonshire Council Welfare Services.

If you are a family with children or pensioner faced with food insecurity, please phone us on 01389743908 to complete a consultation before presenting for food aid. Contact to our admin email address ; [email protected] and or a message to our Facebook messenger can also be used as a means of contacting us.

Please also note that proof of child residency will be required to ensure we are serving a family with children, this can be shown to our office staff, documents such as Universal Credit Statement showing the child element and or Child Benefit/ Scottish Child Payments letters/awards.

Above and beyond this we also must stop our weekly run outreach centres in neighbouring Alexandria and Dalmuir again due to the lack of funds.

Our opening days and hours must be reduced for the next few months and will be the following ;
Monday 10am-3pm
Tuesday 10am-3pm
Wednesday – CLOSED
Thursday 10am-3pm
Friday 10am-3pm

Our team remains dedicated to dignity, respect, and clear communication, and we’ll review our new emergency approach regularly with the council and partner organisations. Thank you for your understanding that our priority now must be focused on the most vulnerable groups families with children and the elderly in our community.

Please note that due to a water leak in the roof affecting the ceiling of our main foodbank distribution reception area and charity shop we are having to serve our service users emergency aid food parcels at the front door and close the charity shop until the relevant WDC Maintenance team makes the repairs. This is to ensure the safety of our service users and charity shop customers/donators. We will provide more updates on the situation when we have an update from WDC.
