📣 It's Learning Disability Week - a week all about raising awareness and celebrating the voices of people with learning disabilities.

This year's theme, “Do you see me?”, asks people to notice, listen to, and include people with learning disabilities, and to value them for who they are.

At Cloverleaf Advocacy, we’re passionate about making sure people with learning disabilities have their voices heard, listened to and respected, whether that's through self-advocacy or support to speak up and drive change.

We also offer services that support people with learning disabilities through friendly, welcoming groups where you can meet others, connect, and simply enjoy spending time together. 💚

✨ If you want your voice to be heard or if you find it hard to express your thoughts, we’re here to help.

Today marks the start of an annual awareness week shining a light on unpaid carers and the incredible contribution they make.

We are proud to share that we have been awarded funding from the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Family, Friends and Carers Matter Fund to deliver our annual Carers Get Together, taking place tomorrow.

Joanne Green, Director of Operations at Cloverleaf Advocacy, said:“ We’re incredibly grateful to the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Family, Friends and Carers Matter Fund for their support in making this community-based project possible.

This is such important work. Unpaid carers give their time freely and without hesitation, and our aim is to bring people together to recognise and support them. Our partners will be on hand to offer a warm welcome, provide expert advice, share experiences and offer valuable support.

There will also be a range of enjoyable activities and refreshments for everyone, making it a truly special day – all made possible thanks to this generous funding.”

Our amazing volunteers help make a positive difference to the people we support every single day 💚
Our Wakefield team is currently looking for enthusiastic and caring volunteers to support our peer groups for autistic people and people with learning disabilities.

Neal, one of our volunteers, shares: “I really enjoy volunteering with the group and seeing how much it’s grown. I’ve always wanted to help people with learning disabilities because of my own lived experience — I want to make a difference.”

Today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn the Cheshire West judgment represents a major change in the legal framework used to protect people who may be deprived of their liberty. For more than ten years, Cheshire West has been a cornerstone safeguard in ensuring these protections are recognised and applied.

Suzi Henderson, CEO of Cloverleaf Advocacy, said: "We are deeply concerned by today’s Supreme Court judgment overruling Cheshire West.

For more than a decade, Cheshire West has been a vital safeguard in helping identify when a person is being deprived of their liberty and ensuring that legal protections are triggered.

Today’s judgement marks a major shift away from that approach. We are extremely concerned by what we see as a serious regression in the safeguarding and upholding of basic human rights for people who are most at risk from systemic abuse, closed cultures, and restrictions on their lives.

We are particularly worried about the practical impact this may have on people with disabilities, autistic people, people with learning disabilities, people with dementia, people with mental ill health, and others who may be living with significant restrictions but who are currently able to challenge those arrangements through formal routes and safeguards.

Independent scrutiny, advocacy, and accessible routes to challenge restrictions are not optional extras. They are essential protections. History has shown that where oversight is weakened, the risk of abuse, neglect, and harmful closed cultures increases.

We are calling for urgent national clarity about the implications of this judgement and for strong, rights-based safeguards to remain in place. Any future guidance or legal reform must protect people’s liberty, dignity, voice, and right to challenge restrictive arrangements.”

Cloverleaf Advocacy will continue to stand alongside people whose rights are at risk and will work with partners across health, social care, and the advocacy sector to press for clarity, accountability, and stronger protections.

🕒 Today is the deadline to submit evidence to the Government’s Timms Review.

We’re proud to share that Cloverleaf Advocacy has submitted our evidence, shaped by the voices of people we support. This includes insights gathered through peer and self-advocacy groups, as well as one-to-one interviews with neurodivergent people, people with learning disabilities, and unpaid carers.

The Timms Review is an independent review looking at how the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system can be improved, with a focus on making it fairer and more accessible for those who rely on it.

Cloverleaf Advocacy’s CEO, Suzi Henderson, said: “PIP is a lifeline for many of the people we support. While we understand the current system may not be perfect and there may be a minority who misuse it, removing this support or creating further barriers to people who already often feel marginalised could have a devastating impact on those who genuinely rely on it. We hope the Timms Review carefully considers the evidence we have shared and uses it to create a system that is fairer, more accessible and truly reflects the real experiences of people it is designed to support.”
