We had a great 'Art in Nature' session today at Community Support Services. We visited Manor Heath, explored the walled garden and park area. We collected sticks, leaves and other autumnal items to make hedgehog pictures and used them in our web design. We are looking forward to our art exhibition which will take place in March 2027 - watch out for more information. Thankyou to CultureDale for funding this fantastic project.

A step back in time at The Piece Hall

Today we enjoyed a fantastic Heritage tour, discovering fascinating facts about the history of Halifax's iconic Piece Hall and learning more about its importance to our local heritage. 30 people attended this great session.

We also had the opportunity to try our hand at weaving and appreciated an important part in our town's textile history.
It was a brilliant opportunity to learn something new, explore our local history and celebrate what makes our community so special.
A big thank you to people who participated Magpies Calderdale College The Mayfield Trust and to Kate for organising. A big shout out to the lovely Piece Hall volunteers Jill and Andrea who showed us around - we all loved it, thank you.

Today is World Mental Health Day 💚

This year’s theme is being heard, because everyone deserves the opportunity to talk about their mental health and feel listened to.

For people with learning disabilities, barriers to communication and accessing support can make being heard even more important.

We can all play our part:

🧠 Talk openly about mental health.
🤝 Create inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued.

Direct Payments can be a really useful way of taking greater control over how your support is arranged and who provides it, but getting started can sometimes feel a bit complicated.

This session is a friendly introduction to Direct Payments, designed to help you understand what they are, who can have one, how they work and what your first steps might be.

Who can access Direct Payments

How Direct Payments can give you greater choice, control and flexibility

What you can use a Direct Payment for

Your responsibilities when managing a Direct Payment

Common worries, questions and myths about Direct Payments

Today Mildred joined a meeting to talk about 'Relationship Centred Care' - really important to listen to people with lived experience and sharing their stories. Mildred is looking forward to talking to other self advocates about what they think 'Relationship Centred Care' is and sharing what she has learnt. Learning Disability England are working with the Race Equality Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support to try and make cancer care fairer for people with learning disabilities from Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

They are setting up a Project Working Group to help shape this project, and are looking for people who:

👉 Have a learning disability, are from a Black, Asian or minoritised ethnic background, and have had experience of cancer (for example, have attended a screening or have a diagnosis of cancer)
👉 Care for someone who fits the above description
