Do you like reading? Would you enjoy sharing ideas in a small, friendly group setting? Then Shared Reading could be a perfect fit for you!

We are looking for Shared Reading volunteers who are welcoming, thoughtful and interested in connecting with others. It’s incredibly rewarding and flexible to fit in with you - from as little as 2-3 hours per month.

As part of a team, you’ll lead our popular Shared Reading session in Derby or online.

Shared Reading is a simple concept that makes a powerful impact. Small groups meet to read aloud, then reflect and talk over any feelings or ideas that emerge. Conversations often blossom into something else entirely … and that’s great!

You don’t need to be ‘well read’ - just empathetic, attentive and keen to facilitate discussion within a positive and inclusive space.

No experience? No problem!
We’ll give you full training and ongoing support. We’ll connect you with a friendly community of fellow volunteers, plenty of shared resources and opportunities.

Shared Reading is a community programme run by Derby Book Festival and funded by the National Lottery.

“I have been volunteering with Shared Reading for 18 months. The real gem is the wonderful people I have met, both group members and other volunteers. Their knowledge and friendship have been remarkable.” Sue, Shared Reading volunteer

Event 7 complete ✅

Since May, we have attended 7 events, and we are really enjoying getting out and about in the community.

📍Today, we attended the disability confident jobs fair at Better Together Café.

We spoke to many individuals who were interested in volunteering for a variety of reasons. It was great to connect with so many members of the community and hear about their goals, interests, and experiences 🤩

🫶🏼 A big thank you to our volunteer, Ana, for all her help and support at the event, we really appreciate it!
