An important update from Cumberworth Community Association - please read
The Cumberworth Community Association (CCA) was established in 1977 and formally recognised as a charity in 1980. During these years, we have held many events and supported initiatives to benefit the local community and beyond.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the CCA we are seeking input and views from you all to help decide the future of the Association.

⭐Well attended summer fetes and family fun days
✨Remembrance events
⭐The wonderful poppy displays across both villages
✨Funding granted to remove several trees in the Village Garden in Upper Cumberworth
⭐New noticeboards in both villages
✨Herb and flower planters, as well as upkeep of the Village Garden
⭐Bi-annual litter picks
✨Bi-annual Village Voice newsletters hand delivered to 650 homes
⭐Wreath making and glass painting events
✨Easter, Jubilee and Coronation events
⭐Christmas events – including arranging the Christmas trees for both villages Secured external funding to financially support projects/events
✨Funding contribution of £500 to Graveyard Restoration Project
⭐Ran and funded all pupils of Cumberworth First School to attend Remembrance craft event in church
✨Worked closely with the church and provided donations when the church is used to run events
⭐Defibrator machines – have provided and maintain the one in Upper and one in Lower Cumberworth
✨Funded the first information flyers for the quarry planning application and the housing development on Barnsley Road
⭐Hosted and funded 3 Annual volunteer thank you events for all volunteers in Cumberworth
✨Fund bi annual planting of the area around the Millenium Stone (opp the Star)
I̲s̲s̲u̲e̲s̲ ̲t̲h̲a̲t̲ ̲w̲e̲ ̲f̲a̲c̲e̲
For 2026, we had hoped to hold a Quiz Night and an Open Gardens event. Last year, we had planned to run a Christmas lights trip to RHS Harlow Carr. Unfortunately, these events were met with very limited interest – less than 5 people expressed interest per event – and none went ahead.
Over the years we have had very little support from residents to water the village planters/herb planters.
Very few if any residents attend the AGM , this year we held it at a different time so that it didn’t clash with children’s bedtime.
Only a few people help with the litter picks, usually no one supports the Lower Cumberworth one.
Cumberworth calendar ceased due to lack of photographic entries.
Lots of people comment on how lovely the Village Garden (area next to the post office) looks, but there are only a couple of people who help with the maintenance.
The majority of our equipment is stored in the Methodist Chapel in Lower Cumberworth and due to the pending closure we need to find an alternative storage facility – this is proving to be very difficult.
The annual insurance is nearly £600/annum, this is necessary in order to hold events.
We produced suggestion boxes (one located in St Nicolas and one in the Post Office) to allow residents to get in touch with CCA (along with email and Facebook) and suggest ideas for future initiatives. None have ever been received.
We currently don’t have a Chairperson and it took nearly two years to recruit a new Treasurer.
W̲h̲o̲ ̲i̲s̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲C̲C̲A̲?̲
CCA is run wholly by volunteers (currently 9) who have their own family, work and other commitments. It would be remiss of us to not mention our Friends of CCA, a small but lovely group of additional volunteers who help us out with litter picks, posting Village Voices newsletters, erecting marquees or baking cakes for events – the list goes on. It is therefore very disheartening when we take time out of our busy lives for little return, in terms of attendance and volunteering from the community.
T̲i̲m̲e̲o̲u̲t̲
At our May 2026 committee meeting, due to the ongoing lack of support and interest from the Cumberworth Community the committee was forced to make the decision that there could not be any Summer or Autumn events, no Autumn Village Voice newsletters and, most likely, no Remembrance event/poppy displays.

The CCA monthly draw – We recognise that many of you will have contributed to the CCA monthly draw and we are pleased to confirm that this will continue, with one selected winner each month winning £50 and additional prizes to be won at Christmas. Winners will be notified by their preferred choice of contact
The CCA page – we will continue to update the page with matters of local interest
Litter picks – these will not be coordinated by CCA volunteers for the rest of the year, however we have all the equipment readily available and will happily loan this to anyone who wishes to do their own litter picks. Please contact us on the email below to arrange this.

We would love to see CCA celebrate its 50th year next year but we really need more support from you, our wonderful community, if CCA is going to last into the next year and beyond. There are clearly a lot of residents that value the area and community that we live in based on the 700+ objections to the proposed housing development.
We would be very grateful if you could provide feedback and thoughts on the future of CCA given the challenges that are faced. This can be done via email ([email protected]), via Facebook or in the suggestion boxes in the Post Office and Church.
The committee is meeting on the 30th September to review feedback and thoughts which will help to decide on the next steps. Please therefore can we have any feedback, offers to help etc by then.
Ultimately unless more members of the community are able to support the CCA it is likely that it will have to fold, resulting in no events being organised, defibrillators removed (if no one else will take the responsibility and cost on) and a decline in the overall care and standard of the villages.
