West of Scotland Cup | Cumbernauld United vs Armadale Union
A cup tie with absolutely everything!
Cumbernauld United travelled to West Lothian for a West of Scotland Cup clash against Armadale Union. Yes, you are not seeing things — apparently, Polbeth is in the West of Scotland! You couldn’t make it up!
We started slowly as we struggled to get to grips with the heavy grass surface, but gradually grew into the game and began to take control. Our pressure was rewarded halfway through the first half when Conor swung a lovely cross in from the left, allowing Keir, clearly feeling the benefit of his Subway stop on the way to the game, to ghost into the box and head home for a deserved opener.
We didn’t have to wait long to double our advantage. Craig made a terrific burst into the box before being upended for what could only be described as a stonewall penalty. Daniel stepped up, kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball home to give us a 2-0 lead.
We created a couple more opportunities before the interval but couldn’t add to our advantage, meaning we went into the break with a deserved two-goal cushion.
A couple of half-time changes were made to freshen things up as we looked for that crucial third goal to put the tie beyond our opponents. Unfortunately, a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping kept the score at 2-0, and we were made to pay for our missed opportunities.
Midway through the second half, Armadale were handed a lifeline following a debatable corner. A mix-up in the box, followed by what resembled a game of pinball, saw the ball eventually find its way into the net to reduce our lead.
We regrouped and went looking for another goal, creating further chances but once again failing to take them. With around 15 minutes remaining, our opponents then struck an equaliser against the run of play after we misjudged a long ball. From being in a commanding position, we suddenly found ourselves facing the prospect of a penalty shootout.
With ten minutes remaining, we were awarded our second penalty of the afternoon after a handball on the goal line. Remarkably, there was no accompanying card, which was somewhat surprising given the rate at which they had been dished out elsewhere during the afternoon! Daniel once again stepped up and made no mistake, restoring our lead and putting us back in front when it mattered most.
The closing stages, however, were anything but straightforward. We lost our discipline in the final ten minutes and somehow managed to finish the game with just nine men. Sometimes, you get the feeling that the man in the middle wants to make the game about himself, and this was certainly an afternoon that tested everyone’s patience.
Deep into the final minute, Armadale were awarded the third penalty of the game following what looked a very soft decision. They had the opportunity to take the tie to a penalty shootout, but thankfully for us, their striker dragged his effort wide. A huge let-off!
With our opponents still pushing for an equaliser, we finally put the tie to bed in injury time. Dylan raced through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and showed great composure to slot the ball home, sealing the victory and sparing us any further late drama.

It was far from a straightforward afternoon, and we certainly made things harder for ourselves than they needed to be. Having led 2-0, we should have taken our chances and put the game beyond reach long before the closing stages. Instead, missed opportunities, some questionable decisions and a loss of discipline made for a nervy finish.
That said, cup football is all about getting through, and despite the late chaos, we showed enough quality to find a way to win and secure our place in the next round.
Three penalties, two red cards, six goals and enough drama to last us a while — all in a West of Scotland Cup tie in Polbeth!
